Horizon Hunters Gathering, a brand new three-player tactical co-op action game, has just been unveiled by Guerrilla Games and PlayStation. And honestly, it's got a distinct "Dauntless" vibe – but with a Horizon twist, of course. Set to launch on PC and PS5, this game marks a significant departure for Guerrilla, traditionally known for their strong single-player narratives.
Dauntless Killer?! New Co-op Game "Horizon Hunters...
According to Guerrilla's lead, Jan-Bart van Beek, the studio remains deeply committed to those single-player experiences. "They are a huge part of who we are as a studio," he affirmed. However, the lure of exploring new creative avenues was simply too strong. Hence, Horizon Hunters Gathering was born. It’s a fascinating move; expanding a beloved single-player world into a cooperative space.
The core concept is pretty straightforward: you and up to two friends team up as heroic "Hunters." Your mission? To protect the world from those iconic, deadly machines that make the Horizon universe so compelling. Think strategic teamwork, coordinating abilities, and taking down massive robotic beasts. I'm already picturing the frantic communication and strategic planning required for some of those encounters!
But it's not *just* about the monster hunts. Each hunter boasts their own unique skills, motivations, and even "personal struggles." This suggests that Guerrilla is aiming to weave some compelling new narratives within the established Horizon lore. Which is great news, because the story is often just as good as the action.
The developers are being pretty tight-lipped about the specific narrative campaign details, teasing only that it will introduce new mysteries, characters, and threats. What's really interesting, though, is that they’ve confirmed that "Hunters Gathering is fully canon and its story doesn't stop at launch!" This hints at a potentially evolving narrative with ongoing updates and content, which could really give the game some serious legs.
"This is both an exciting and daunting step for us," admits Horizon Hunters Gathering game director Arjan Bak. "Multiplayer games have always been part of our studio’s DNA, and it's where I began my own career. Bringing a co-op hunting experience into the Horizon universe is something we’ve envisioned for a long time, and we’re approaching it with care, ambition, and passion." It's worth remembering that the Horizon franchise is a massive success story. Just last year, reports indicated that PlayStation and Guerrilla had surpassed 40 million copies sold. So, this move into multiplayer is a calculated risk, but one backed by a seriously strong foundation.
And the Horizon universe isn't stopping there! Let's not forget that a Horizon MMO, developed by NCSoft and known as Horizon Steel Frontiers, is also in the works. Described as a "fierce survival adventure," this game promises "large-scale raids" and an "advanced combat system" in a region called Deathlands. So, if cooperative machine hunting isn't quite your thing, maybe an MMO will be. It seems like Guerrilla and PlayStation are aiming to build a full-fledged Horizon universe across multiple platforms and genres. It will be interesting to see how both games are received by players.
