Well, folks, the rumors are true. Sony has officially pulled back the curtain on Horizon Hunters Gathering, Guerrilla Games' foray into the live-service multiplayer arena. And honestly, it's not quite what I expected, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Set in the familiar, yet always breathtaking, world of Horizon, this new title is heading to both PlayStation 5 and PC.
Horizon Hunters Gathering: Is This Sony's Answer t...
First things first: there's a closed playtest coming up in late February, which you can sign up for through the PlayStation Beta Program. Crossplay and cross-progression are also planned, which is a huge win for players across platforms. However, the big questions – release date and pricing model (free-to-play or premium?) – remain unanswered. Sony's keeping us on our toes, it seems.
Now, let's talk about the visuals. The debut trailer showcases a *very* different art style. Think more stylized, cartoonish even, rather than the hyper-realistic graphics of Aloy's adventures. It’s a significant departure, and suggests a shift in tone, potentially aiming for a more accessible and lighthearted experience. The gameplay footage certainly gives off some serious Monster Hunter vibes, which is an interesting direction. I am somewhat concerned how this departure in style will be accepted by dedicated fans.
According to game director Arjan Bak in a PlayStation Blog post, Horizon Hunters Gathering is a "tactical three-player co-op experience" focused on battling those magnificent, deadly machines that we all love (and fear). He emphasized "tactical, reactive, and deeply skill-based combat," building on the core mechanics of the main Horizon games but with a focus on teamwork and replayable hunts. Think strategic planning and coordinated attacks, rather than lone-wolf heroics. Players will have a roster of Hunters to choose from, each with unique playstyles, weapons, and a rogue-lite perk system to customize their builds.
Narrative-wise, Bak teased a story-driven campaign with "new mysteries, characters, and threats," but details are scarce. He did confirm that Hunters Gathering is "fully canon" and that the story will continue to evolve post-launch. The social hub, called Hunters Gathering, sounds like your typical gathering place – a spot to customize your Hunter, visit vendors, upgrade gear, and team up with friends for your next adventure.
It's worth noting that Hunters Gathering isn't the only multiplayer project in the Horizon pipeline. NCSoft and Sony are also working on Horizon Steel Frontiers, a mobile MMORPG with PC compatibility. While NCSoft is leading development, Guerrilla is contributing to the world-building process. Meanwhile, those of you waiting for Horizon 3 will have to be patient, as reports indicate it's still "a ways off." And for movie buffs, Sony is reportedly planning to start filming a live-action Horizon Zero Dawn movie this year, with a tentative 2027 release date. So, plenty of Horizon content to look forward to, in various forms!
