Sony SHOCKED! New Game Crushes Tsushima - What Will Happen Next?!
Gaming News 05 February 2026

Big news for PlayStation fans! Sony is practically beaming about the success of their latest PlayStation 5 exclusive, Ghost of Yotei. Apparently, this samurai sequel is slicing through sales expectations, having already outperformed its predecessor, Ghost of Tsushima, during the equivalent launch window. And, according to Sony, this is translating into a "significant" boost to the company's financial performance. Not bad, eh?

Sony SHOCKED! New Game Crushes Tsushima - What Wil...

Sucker Punch's Ghost of Yotei, which dropped on October 2, 2025, managed to move a whopping 3.3 million units by November 2nd. That's just 32 days! While we're all waiting with bated breath for the detailed financial report covering the quarter ending December 31, 2025, (which, let’s be honest, will probably be dissected frame-by-frame by industry analysts), the game got a serious shout-out during Sony's recent webcast. IGN's team expertly reviewed and transcribed that, of course.

Lin Tao, Sony's chief financial officer, made the bold statement: "In the studio business, Ghost of Yotei, a tentpole title we released in October, exceeded the sales of the previous title in the same period of time and significantly contributed to the financial results of the quarter." Now, that “same period of time” bit is key – we're assuming she means the initial quarter on sale for each game. Still, the overall vibe is undeniably positive for Yotei.

So, how does this compare to the legendary Ghost of Tsushima? Well, Tsushima launched on the PlayStation 4 way back on July 17, 2020. It sold a respectable 2.4 million copies in its first three days and hit 5 million after 118 days (almost four months). Current figures from Sony reveal that Ghost of Tsushima has now sold 13 million copies, including sales of the PC and PS5 Director's Cut versions, as of August 11, 2024. A phenomenal success story in its own right.

However, context is everything, right? Ghost of Tsushima launched on the PS4, which, back in the summer of 2020, had a much bigger install base than the PS5 currently enjoys. Plus, we can't forget the pandemic-fueled gaming boom. Everyone was stuck at home, glued to their screens! Ghost of Yotei also comes with that premium $70 price tag, which could inflate dollar sales compared to the initially cheaper Ghost of Tsushima (standard edition launched at $60). All things considered, Yotei's performance is seriously impressive.
