Tigers Land Valdez! Skubal's Fate Shocks Detroit?!

Detroit's got some serious pitching heat brewing. The Tigers just landed Framber Valdez, and if they can hold onto Tarik Skubal, well, they're looking at a truly formidable one-two punch on the mound. With Spring Training just around the corner, this is a major get for the team.

Tigers Land Valdez! Skubal's Fate Shocks Detroit?!

It's interesting timing, to say the least. The Valdez announcement dropped on the very same day that Skubal and the Tigers were locked in an arbitration hearing. As of Wednesday night, the results of that hearing were still pending. But regardless, Detroit is clearly making moves to boost their rotation, adding a former All-Star to potentially pair with their Cy Young-caliber ace. Valdez inked a three-year, $115 million contract, which is pretty substantial.

The deal brings Valdez back under the wing of his old Houston Astros manager, A.J. Hinch, which could be a real plus for both of them. Word is there's an opt-out clause after the second season, giving Valdez some flexibility. While he didn't quite snag the long-term deal many expected for a guy of his caliber (32 years old and three top-10 Cy Young finishes in the last four years, c'mon!), the $38.3 million average annual value sets a new high for left-handed pitchers. Oh, and because of that qualifying offer attached to him, the Tigers will have to cough up a draft pick. Still, probably worth it.

This is arguably the biggest splash made by President of Baseball Operations Scott Harris since he took over the reins back in September 2022. The goal? To really capitalize on what might be Skubal's last season in a Tigers uniform, and to build a rotation that can finally push past that ALDS wall that's been holding them back for the past few years. The fans in Detroit are hungry for a deep playoff run; you can feel it.

Let's face it, last year the Tigers' starters weren't exactly eating up innings. They ranked pretty low across the league in that department. Only three guys even cracked the 100-inning mark, and of those, only Skubal managed to keep his ERA below 3.80. Valdez, a two-time All-Star, is expected to be a big upgrade in that regard. He's consistently been a workhorse, logging over 175 innings in each of the last four seasons, keeping his ERA under 3.70 for the past six, and boasting the highest ground ball rate among pitchers with at least 100 starts since 2018. Talk about consistency!

Since 2020, when Valdez became a full-time starter in Houston, only he and Zack Wheeler have both made at least 150 starts with an ERA under 3.30. His 2022 season was something else, too – 17-6 with a 2.82 ERA, followed by a ridiculous 1.44 ERA over four playoff starts, playing a huge role in the Astros' World Series run. He did have a bit of a dip in the second half of last year, but the Tigers are clearly betting that the overall track record and consistency outweigh that. Even with that dip, he still finished with a respectable 3.66 ERA. Sure, it's his highest since becoming a full-time starter, but sometimes you just need to see the bigger picture.

While Valdez might not be a strikeout machine, he's incredibly effective with that sinker ball. This signing has the potential to be a game-changer for the Tigers. All eyes will be on Detroit this season, that's for sure.
