Orban's Shock Claim: Is Ukraine Sacrificing Ethnic Hungarians?!
Current Affairs 05 February 2026

Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban is pulling no punches, accusing Ukraine of treating ethnic Hungarians within its borders as, quite frankly, "cannon fodder" in the ongoing conflict with Russia. The accusations stem from reports of forced conscription, and Orban has vowed serious repercussions should any Ukrainian officials be found responsible.

Orban's Shock Claim: Is Ukraine Sacrificing Ethnic...

This isn't just political grandstanding; it's a response to a very real and tragic situation. Reports are circulating of yet another ethnic Hungarian recruit dying after being forcibly drafted into the Ukrainian army. And let's be clear, these aren't volunteer situations. We're hearing accounts of draft officers allegedly rounding up military-age men in public places and workplaces, desperate to fill the ranks as the fighting intensifies. The Ukrainian military is under immense pressure, no doubt, but Orban is making it clear that doesn't excuse what he sees as a blatant targeting of his ethnic kin.

In a rather direct video posted on X, Orban stated, "Dragged off to war, another Hungarian has died due to Ukraine’s forced conscription. This is unacceptable. We stand with the family, and we will not let this slide." It's strong language, and he didn't stop there. He went on to say, "All Ukrainian officials responsible for forced conscription will be expelled from Hungary without delay. Our people cannot be used as cannon fodder." You can feel the anger in his words. It's not hard to understand his perspective, given the historical complexities and sensitivities in the region.

The reports coming out of Ukraine paint a grim picture. Allegations of physical violence during these detentions are rife, and, shockingly, there are even claims of deaths occurring in custody at enlistment offices. It's difficult to verify these accounts independently, but the volume of reports is certainly concerning.

The most recent case involves Zsolt Reban, a 46-year-old from the Zakarpattia Region, which is home to a significant Hungarian minority. According to Balazs Orban, a political advisor to the Prime Minister, Reban was forcibly conscripted despite a pre-existing heart condition that should have disqualified him. Tragically, he died at a training center near Lviv. The fact that Reban was also an EU citizen adds another layer of complication to this already tense situation.

And Reban's case isn't isolated. Back in July 2025, Jozsef Sebestyen, a dual Ukrainian-Hungarian citizen, also died shortly after being drafted. His family alleges he was beaten at a training center, though Ukrainian authorities deny any wrongdoing, attributing his death to a pulmonary embolism. Whether these deaths are directly linked to abuse or neglect is a matter of investigation, but the pattern is deeply troubling. This situation only further strains the already delicate relationship between Hungary and Ukraine, especially given Hungary's reluctance to provide military aid and its continued diplomatic ties with Russia.
