Team GB's Winter Olympics campaign got off to a flying start today, thanks to a determined performance from Bruce Mouat and Jen Dodds in mixed doubles curling. Facing Norway in their opening match, the duo battled through an early deficit, a rather inconvenient power cut, and ultimately secured a well-deserved 8-6 victory.
Team GB Curling Glory! But a SHOCK Twist Looms... ...
Mouat and Dodds, who are definitely among the favorites to medal in Cortina, looked remarkably composed as they stepped onto the ice in the Cortina Curling Olympic Stadium. The arena itself is a bit of a throwback, with its distinctive wooden features harking back to the 1956 Games. You could feel the history in the place.
Things didn't exactly go smoothly at first. A sudden loss of power caused a brief blackout, disrupting what was already a somewhat shaky opening end. But the reigning world silver medallists showed their mettle, bouncing back in style to score a crucial three points in the second end. From there, they managed to maintain their lead throughout the match, securing a vital win in their first of nine round-robin games. This victory also offered a sweet sense of revenge, as it avenged their painful semi-final loss to the Norwegian pair in 2022, where they ultimately missed out on a bronze medal.
Looking ahead, this win puts them in a great position for their matches on Thursday. They'll be facing Estonia and the Czech Republic, both of whom unfortunately lost their opening games. So, fingers crossed for more success! And for those of us back home wanting to follow along, the BBC will be broadcasting the matches live – a definite plus.
The opening day's action in Cortina d'Ampezzo, a typically swanky Italian resort, was quite a spectacle. Upbeat music and disco lights added to the atmosphere, despite some pretty heavy snowfall in the Dolomites earlier in the day which later turned to sleet. A pretty sizeable crowd, estimated at around 3,500, filled the arena, eager to witness the start of the Games.
That power outage I mentioned earlier? It plunged a good chunk of the spectators into darkness for what felt like an eternity – several minutes at least – before the scoring screens flickered back to life and play could resume. It added a certain unexpected drama to the proceedings, that's for sure!
Initially, Norway's husband-and-wife team, Magnus Nedregotten and Kristin Skaslien, seemed to have the upper hand. But the match soon evolved into a much more cautious, tactical affair. Mouat and Dodds really grabbed the initiative with that brilliant second end, and after a very close fourth end, they went into the break leading 4-3. Norway, who were bronze medallists in 2018, managed to level the score after the interval. Despite Nedregotten's strong performance, and Skaslien's… let’s just say less consistent showing (hopefully no marital strife!), they couldn't stop Team GB from scoring three points in the sixth end, thanks to a truly stunning throw by Dodds.
That shot opened up a significant three-shot lead with just two ends remaining, giving them a comfortable cushion to see out the victory.
"It took us a bit of time to work out one end was curling more than the other, but once we did we took a step up in performance and took control from there," Dodds explained after the match. "It's a good confidence builder to start the week." And you know what? She's absolutely right. What a start for Team GB!
