IndiGo Under Fire! Mass Cancellations Trigger Official Probe.

India's largest airline, IndiGo, is facing some serious turbulence. The Competition Commission of India (CCI), the country's competition regulator, has just announced a formal investigation into the airline following mass flight cancellations last December. The allegations are pretty serious: that IndiGo deliberately engineered an "artificial scarcity" of seats, disrupting travel plans for thousands and potentially manipulating prices.

The CCI's order, made public Wednesday, paints a picture of IndiGo as a dominant force in Indian aviation. With its massive fleet, extensive route network, and deep pockets, the regulator argues that IndiGo wields significant power over the market. It's a power, the CCI suggests, that may have been abused.

Think about it: if the biggest player suddenly pulls a bunch of flights, what options do passengers really have? According to the CCI, these widespread cancellations essentially locked consumers into using IndiGo, whether they liked it or not. That’s because the cancellations came at a peak travel time, leaving frustrated travelers with few alternatives.

The investigation was sparked by a complaint from a lawyer who, like many others, apparently experienced firsthand the headaches and financial pain caused by the cancellations. He argued that the sudden drop in available seats led to price gouging and massive inconvenience for passengers. It's a story I've heard echoed by many travelers over the years, and frankly, it resonates. We’ve all been there – scrambling to rebook flights, paying exorbitant last-minute fares, and generally feeling helpless.

The regulator's concern is that IndiGo's actions might have had a broader impact, harming competition within the Indian aviation sector itself. By allegedly limiting access to air travel during a high-demand period, the CCI believes IndiGo could have distorted the market in its favor. It’s a serious charge, and one that warrants a thorough examination.

IndiGo has so far remained silent on the matter, declining to comment on the CCI's investigation. It's a developing story, to be sure. And this isn’t the first time IndiGo has faced scrutiny recently. Just last month, India's aviation regulator slapped the airline with a hefty US$2.45 million fine, along with warnings to top executives, and even mandated the removal of the head of operations control. That followed an investigation into compliance with new pilot rest and duty regulations. It's been a bumpy ride for the airline lately, and this latest probe is unlikely to smooth things out anytime soon.
