Well, folks, it looks like Makkah is in for a bit of a weather rollercoaster. The National Center for Meteorology (NCM) just dropped a rather urgent alert, and it sounds like the typical desert dryness is about to take a back seat to some serious winter weather. We're talking thunderstorms, hail, and winds that could give your car a run for its money.
Saudi Arabia Weather Alert: Makkah Braces for Deva...
As of today, February 4th, 2026, the meteorologists are keeping a close eye on a system brewing that could unleash moderate to heavy thunderstorms across Makkah and the surrounding areas. Now, I've been to Makkah a few times, and February is usually pretty predictable – sunny and dry. This is anything but typical.
What's particularly concerning is the potential for hail. I mean, imagine being caught in a hailstorm in the middle of the desert! The NCM is also warning about some hefty "downdraft winds" that could reach up to 60 km/h. That's enough to whip up some serious dust and sand, making visibility pretty awful, especially on the open roads. Think twice about that road trip, maybe?
The heavy rain also carries a significant risk of flash floods, especially in those low-lying areas and valleys. We're talking about rainfall that could exceed 10mm per hour in some spots. And for those of you near the Red Sea coast, in places like Jeddah and Rabigh, prepare for some rough seas. Waves could easily reach over two meters, making conditions pretty dangerous for boating or even just strolling along the beach.
Authorities are taking this seriously, as they should. The General Directorate of Civil Defense and the Crisis and Disaster Management Center in Makkah have apparently kicked things into high gear. The main advice? Extreme caution. If you're a pilgrim or just passing through, pay extra attention to weather updates and avoid unnecessary travel, especially in vulnerable areas. Keep an eye on the sky, secure any outdoor belongings, and for goodness' sake, don't park your car under a tree during a hailstorm! Stay safe out there, folks. This is one desert storm you definitely want to avoid.
