Well, folks, it looks like my wallet is about to take another hit! Just when I thought I could recover from the Fallout-themed Magic: The Gathering Superdrop, Wizards of the Coast is back at it again, this time with a Dungeons & Dragons extravaganza. And guess what? Baldur's Gate 3, that game that completely consumed my life for a solid month (no regrets!), is getting some serious love. I’m talking about two Secret Lair drops centered around none other than Shadowheart and Gale.
Baldur's Gate 3 Invades Magic: The Gathering - Pre...
For those unfamiliar, Secret Lairs are limited-edition sets of cards with alternative art, often featuring unique themes and collaborations. They're basically collector's catnip. This time, we're getting seven D&D-themed drops in total, but the Baldur's Gate 3 ones are stealing the show, at least in my book. I mean, who *doesn't* love Shadowheart's brooding charm and Gale's… well, his dramatic flair?
First up is "Secret Lair x Dungeons & Dragons: Shadowheart's Devotion." Of course, Shadowheart, Dark Justiciar, her legendary creature card from the Battle for Baldur's Gate set, is the star. But it's not just a rehash. This drop includes an Ancient Bronze Dragon and three other cards – Beseech the Queen, Black Market, and Victimize – that are designed to play well with her in a Commander deck. Smart move, Wizards! They know exactly how to hook us Commander players. I can already see myself building a Shadowheart deck overflowing with shadowy secrets and Shar-related shenanigans.
Then we have "Secret Lair x Dungeons & Dragons: Gale's Ambition," because Gale simply *has* to be ambitious. This one highlights the wizard from Waterdeep, and much like the Shadowheart drop, it features Gale's original legendary creature card alongside four supporting reprints. The article I was reading didn't specify *which* cards, but I'm hoping for some powerful instants and sorceries that let Gale show off his magical prowess. Maybe a few that involve Mystra? One can only dream (and spend more money).
Honestly, this is a brilliant move by Wizards. Capitalizing on the popularity of Baldur's Gate 3 is a no-brainer, and these Secret Lairs are sure to be a hit with both Magic and D&D fans. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have some financial planning to do. Gotta figure out how to explain these purchases to my significant other... wish me luck!
