Broadway said goodbye to two familiar faces last week, but not before they gave the box office one last hurrah. Both "Mamma Mia!" and "Liberation Sunday" saw a surge in ticket sales as their closing dates of February 1st loomed, proving that sometimes, a deadline is the best motivator – even for theatergoers.
Broadway SHOCKER! Beloved Shows Close! What's NEXT...
The infectious tunes of ABBA clearly still resonate, as the revival of "Mamma Mia!" pulled in a whopping $1,821,528 during its final week. That's a substantial $392,259 jump from the week before! Clearly, people wanted one last chance to dance, jive, and have the time of their lives. The Winter Garden Theatre was practically bursting at the seams, filled to 99% capacity. It's always a little bittersweet to see a show close, but what a way to go out!
Bess Wohl's "Liberation," a play that really got people talking, also ended its 17-week limited run on a high note. It achieved its highest gross ever, earning $734,237 and filling 94% of the seats at the James Earl Jones Theatre. This just goes to show that thoughtful, engaging theatre can absolutely find its audience. It will be interesting to see what Bess Wohl does next.
Overall, Broadway is doing pretty well. The 31 productions currently running collectively grossed $31,766,855 for the week ending February 1st. That's a solid 6% increase compared to the previous week. Attendance also climbed by 8%, reaching a total of 269,655. People are clearly still drawn to the magic of live theater, and that's encouraging news for the industry.
Of course, some shows are consistently selling out. "Hamilton," "Just In Time," and "Oh, Mary!" all achieved 100% capacity for the week. Talk about hot tickets! Other shows packing houses included "Hadestown," "Marjorie Prime," "Oedipus," "Operation Mincemeat," "Ragtime," and "Wicked." And, unsurprisingly, "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" remained the top earner, pulling in a cool $2,364,698. I heard Tom Felton was in the audience one night last week, which no doubt contributed to the buzz.
Interestingly, "Buena Vista Social Club" also saw a boost after winning a Grammy for best theater recording. They filled 94% of the seats at the Schoenfeld Theatre and grossed $893,446. That just goes to show you the power of a little Grammy recognition! All figures are, as always, courtesy of The Broadway League.
