Well, folks, the Gaming industry never sleeps! We've got a new player entering the arena, and it's not a game studio – it's a consulting agency called Fractional. And they've snagged some serious talent to help struggling game developers navigate the increasingly choppy waters of this industry.
Xbox Icon's Shock Move After Layoff: What's Next f...
Fractional just emerged from "stealth mode" (as they say in the biz) after quietly operating since October 2025. What caught my eye, though, was their announcement that Larry Hryb, a name many of you probably recognize as "Major Nelson" from his long tenure on the Xbox team at Microsoft, has joined their ranks. Hryb recently found himself caught in the Unity layoffs, a stark reminder that even industry giants aren't immune to economic headwinds.
The agency was founded by Jim Squires, who also heads up Rocketship Park, a digital design studio. Squires seems to be building a real dream team. Along with Hryb, Fractional has brought aboard Kelly Ekins, formerly a senior director of global PR at Unity (another victim of those same layoffs, I understand), Henry Stockade, who used to be a senior editor over at UploadVR, and Stephanie Greenall, previously head of communications at Tilt Five. That's a *lot* of experience packed into one relatively new company.
So, what's Fractional's pitch? They're essentially offering "industry-leading talent on loan" to game creators. The idea is to provide expertise in areas like marketing, communications, business development, and operations, especially to studios that are feeling the pinch with "dwindling resources." It's a clever concept, really. It's kind of like having a seasoned veteran come in and parachute-support your team without having to commit to a full-time, permanent position.
According to their press release, Fractional wants to connect studios with experienced operators working across non-development disciplines. Squires is emphasizing that they aren't incentivized to push mismatched solutions just to keep people busy. "By partnering with contractors, fractional becomes one of several paths for members of our network to connect with new projects," he said. "That structure allows us to focus on carefully curating the right solutions for each studio, without competing interests." In other words, they’re aiming for objective advice, which is a valuable commodity in this industry, believe me!
It seems they've already been busy, too. Fractional says they've been quietly working with companies like Commodore International, Halfbrick Studios (the folks behind *Fruit Ninja*!), and Trace AR since last year. It'll be interesting to see how Fractional carves out its niche in the gaming world. With the talent they've assembled, and the growing need for strategic guidance in an increasingly competitive market, they might just be onto something big.
