Porsche, a company that really seemed to be leading the charge into the electric future, might be hitting a snag. Remember all the buzz about the all-electric 718 Cayman and Boxster? Well, those plans might be getting seriously re-evaluated. It's surprising, given how smoothly the Taycan launch went and the subsequent push for electric versions of other models, like the Cayenne.
Porsche's Electric Dream CRUSHED?! Shocking U-Turn...
The latest whispers, coming from a Bloomberg report, suggest Porsche is considering putting the brakes on the electric 718 Cayman and Boxster altogether. Apparently, the new CEO is looking at possibly suspending the development, and the big reasons being thrown around are ballooning costs and delays. It's a tough pill to swallow, especially considering the initial excitement surrounding these models.
This isn't exactly brand new news, though. Back in December 2024, there were rumblings of trouble. An engineer allegedly let slip that Porsche was significantly behind schedule. Then, in May, we heard about Northvolt's potential financial woes potentially forcing Porsche to pump the brakes. The core issue, it was said at the time, was Porsche struggling with the development, especially when it came to keeping the weight down. Weight is always a killer when you're trying to make a sports car electric.
And adding even more fuel to the fire, Porsche announced in September that they'd *continue* making internal combustion engine (ICE) versions of the 718 family. So, the new generation 718, which we all thought was going to be electric-only, might now just be offered with good old-fashioned gasoline engines. Frankly, this smells a lot like a backup plan, or maybe even a complete pivot.
Production of the previous generation 718 actually ended in October. Motor1's US team, always on the ball, has already reached out to Porsche for a comment. It's all just speculation for now, of course, but where there's smoke, there's usually fire. I'll keep you all updated as soon as we hear anything official. It's a developing story, and frankly, a bit of a bummer if you were hoping for a screaming electric 718 anytime soon.
