Trump's Shock India Deal: Tariffs Slashed! What Did Putin Lose?
Current Affairs 02 February 2026

Well, folks, looks like there's been a development in the ongoing saga of international trade and geopolitical maneuvering. Former President Trump announced Monday a significant shift in trade relations with India, and it all hinges on the situation in Ukraine. According to a Truth Social post, Trump intends to lower tariffs on goods from India from a hefty 25% down to 18%. The reason? Apparently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has agreed to halt India's purchases of Russian oil.

Trump's Shock India Deal: Tariffs Slashed! What Di...

Now, this is interesting, to say the least. For months, Trump has been applying pressure on India to curb its reliance on cheap Russian crude. As many of you know, after Russia's invasion of Ukraine back in February 2022, much of the world sought to isolate Moscow economically. However, India, seizing an opportunity, capitalized on the significantly discounted Russian oil prices. You can't really blame them, right? Every country is looking out for its own interests, especially when it comes to energy.

But here's where it gets even more interesting. Trump claims that India will also begin reducing its import taxes on U.S. goods to zero and, get this, purchase a staggering $500 billion worth of American products. Half a trillion dollars! That's a number that's hard to even wrap your head around. And, according to Trump, this whole deal is aimed at helping "END THE WAR in Ukraine, which is taking place right now, with thousands of people dying each and every week!" A bold claim, to be sure.

Historically, India's relationship with Russia has been more about defense than energy. While Russia only supplies a small portion of India's oil needs, it's the primary supplier of their military hardware. However, the cut-rate prices on Russian oil, post-invasion, were an opportunity too good to pass up for India. It allowed them to boost their energy supplies while Russia was desperately looking for ways to keep its economy afloat and fund its war efforts. It's a complex situation with a lot of moving parts.

It's worth remembering that Trump has maintained a fairly warm relationship with Modi. It was only in June that the U.S. slapped a 25% tariff on Indian goods, plus an additional import tax, explicitly because of India's continued purchases of Russian oil. So, this new development suggests either a significant change of heart on India's part, or perhaps a masterful negotiation tactic by Trump. Whatever the case, it's a story we'll be keeping a close eye on, especially concerning its potential impact on the conflict in Ukraine and the global energy market.
