Ashes of Creation in Crisis! Staff Exodus & Steam Investigation?!
Gaming News 02 February 2026

Ashes of Creation, the ambitious MMORPG that promised to revolutionize the genre, is facing a crisis that could spell its untimely end. Whispers of internal strife have erupted into a full-blown conflagration, with reports of a mass exodus of senior staff, potential layoffs, and even a Steam investigation swirling around Intrepid Studios.

Ashes of Creation in Crisis! Staff Exodus & Steam ...

The game, which generated considerable hype after a wildly successful $3.2 million Kickstarter campaign back in 2017, aimed to deliver a dynamic, player-driven world. Think old-school RPG sensibilities meeting modern MMORPG design – a tempting proposition for genre veterans and newcomers alike. The early access launch on Steam in December, while not without its issues, initially drew a dedicated crowd willing to invest in the game's potential.

But the rosy picture quickly began to fade. News broke late last month that Director Steven Sharif had resigned "in protest." This alone would be concerning, but the situation quickly spiraled. Allegedly, Sharif's departure was accompanied by the majority of Intrepid Studios' senior development team. Sharif hinted at a fundamental disagreement with the management board, stating they requested actions he "could not ethically support." Ouch. He further claims the board issued WARN Act notices, essentially layoff warnings, to the remaining staff. The real kicker? The total number of Intrepid employees now remains frustratingly unclear.

"I cannot responsibly speak to further details at this time due to ongoing legal and governance matters," Sharif stated in a brief public statement. "What I can say is that the developers and staff acted in good faith and deserved better than the uncertainty that they are now facing. I am incredibly dismayed at the situation." This sounds less like a simple disagreement and more like a full-blown corporate meltdown. And honestly, as someone who's followed this game's development for years, it's genuinely disheartening.

Adding fuel to the fire, Margaret Krohn, Director of Communications, confirmed her own departure over the weekend via a somewhat cryptic LinkedIn post. "Well… this chapter has come to a close. My time at Intrepid Studios has officially ended. As for how this all ended… I don't really have the words. It wasn't what I expected. But I'm holding onto the good because there was so much of it." The tone speaks volumes, doesn't it?

When pressed about whether the game was still in active development at Intrepid Studios, Krohn offered a blunt assessment. "I don't work there anymore, so I can't answer that for you. Personally, I don't know how they would make it when the heart and soul of the product, the amazing dev team, was all laid off." If these allegations are accurate, the future of Ashes of Creation is looking incredibly bleak. Add in the rumors of a Steam investigation related to the state of the game and misleading information, and you've got a recipe for disaster. The community is understandably worried, and honestly, so am I.
