President Lee Jae-myung isn't mincing words when it comes to the Housing market. He’s clearly fired back at the main opposition People Power Party (PPP) after they criticized the government’s latest plan to cool down the ever-heating real estate situation. It seems pretty clear that Lee is digging in his heels on this one, judging from his recent social media activity.
Lee's Housing Plan Under Fire! Will It Cause a Cri...
The controversy started when Choi Bo-yun, a spokesperson for the PPP, slammed the government’s housing supply plan. According to Choi, it blocked “necessary solutions” and relied too heavily on utilizing idle land, which she likened to "rationing of real estate." A pretty harsh assessment, to say the least.
Lee didn't take that lying down. He shared the news article quoting Choi's criticisms on X (formerly Twitter) and responded with a pointed question: "What about stopping support for real estate speculation that could ruin the country?" Ouch. It's a pretty direct shot, and it signals he’s not backing down from his commitment to tackling what he sees as a speculative bubble.
Interestingly, Lee also shared another news report highlighting an urgent sale of a luxury apartment in southern Seoul – and get this, the price had been slashed! This apparently happened right after he announced the government would be ending the temporary suspension of higher capital gains taxes on owners of multiple homes. Now, correlation isn’t causation, but it certainly *looks* like his words are having an impact, at least in some segments of the market. You have to wonder how much of this is a planned strategy on the part of his administration to create this effect on purpose, and how much is just good timing. Either way, it's good news for people looking to buy real estate in Seoul, if you can afford the lowered prices.
This isn't just a one-off either. This latest social media salvo is part of a broader pattern. Lee has been consistently using social media to signal his determination to get the Housing market under control. Whether his policies will ultimately succeed remains to be seen, but one thing's for sure: he's making it abundantly clear where he stands on the issue. It’ll be interesting to see how the PPP responds to this latest escalation.
