MINNEAPOLIS – A heartening story of reunion unfolded Sunday as five-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos and his father, Adrian Conejo Arias, arrived back in Minneapolis after being released from Immigration detention. The pair, who are seeking asylum in the U.S., were detained just last week, sparking outrage and raising serious questions about current immigration enforcement practices.

In an exclusive interview with ABC News shortly after their release from the Dilley detention center in Texas, Conejo Arias expressed his relief. "I'm happy to finally be going home," he said, his voice likely thick with emotion. "Liam is very happy to be going back. He’s going to see his mom and his brother again." Liam, in his simple, childlike way, echoed his father's sentiment with a single, "Good." You can just imagine the weight lifted from their shoulders.

The release was mandated by U.S. District Judge Fred Biery, who ordered it happen "as soon as practicable" following their detention on January 20th. According to reports, Liam was picked up shortly after arriving home from preschool. School officials, as you can imagine, were shocked. His father, Adrian, was reportedly detained in their driveway. According to ABC News, they already had a pending asylum case, and no active deportation order. It's a scenario that sends shivers down your spine – the sudden disruption of a child's life.

Judge Biery's order went beyond simply mandating their release; it delivered a stinging rebuke of the government's actions. He stated that the case appeared to stem from a "ill-conceived and incompetently-implemented government pursuit of daily deportation quotas, apparently even if it requires traumatizing children." It's rare to see such strong language from a judge, and it really underscores the severity of the situation.

The judge didn't mince words, adding that "the perfidious lust for unbridled power and the imposition of cruelty in its quest know no bounds and are bereft of human decency." Powerful stuff. "And the rule of law be damned," he concluded. It's pretty clear where he stands on this.

However, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) presented a drastically different narrative. Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin claimed that ICE "did NOT target or arrest a child," insisting that they were conducting a "targeted operation" aimed at Conejo Arias, described as an "illegal alien." McLaughlin alleged that Conejo Arias "fled on foot -- abandoning his child" and that Liam's "alleged mother" refused to take custody. It's quite the contrast to the story being told by the family and their legal team. It certainly leaves you wondering about the truth of the matter.

The DHS account starkly contradicts the version offered by Conejo Arias, his family's attorney, and school officials. Conejo Arias insists he was detained while walking with his son. This discrepancy highlights the complexities and often conflicting narratives that surround Immigration enforcement, leaving many questions unanswered and fueling the ongoing debate about humane treatment and due process.
