Veteran, teen debutant set to lead S. Korean charge in Short track
**Short Track SHOCKER: Can Veteran & Teen Power Ko...
South Korea, a nation practically synonymous with Short track speed skating, is gearing up for another medal-laden performance at the upcoming Milan-Cortina Games. Their dominance is undeniable – a staggering 53 Olympic medals, including 26 golds, a testament to the country's dedication to the sport. To put it into perspective, short track has brought home more Olympic glory than all other Winter Olympic disciplines combined across 19 Games. That’s serious bragging rights.
This time around, the weight of expectation rests on the shoulders of a seasoned champion and a fresh-faced newcomer. Three-time Olympic gold medalist Choi Min-jeong is leading the women's team, hoping to further solidify her legendary status. For the men, it's all eyes on Rim Jong-un, an 18-year-old ready to make his Olympic debut. You can almost feel the pressure mounting!
Choi, already a five-time Olympic medalist, is on the cusp of making history. Just one more medal will tie her with Jin Jong-oh (shooting), Kim Soo-nyung (archery), and Lee Seung-hoon (speed skating) for the most Olympic medals ever won by a South Korean athlete. And a single gold would see her match Chun Lee-kyung's record for the most Winter Olympic gold medals won by a South Korean. It's a huge opportunity, and you know she's feeling the heat, despite her experience. What's more, she took a break during the 2023-2024 season to mentally recharge. I suspect this break could be the key to her success as she approaches what might be her final Olympics.
On the other side of the experience spectrum is Rim Jong-un. He's the surprise package, having earned his spot after stunning veteran skaters during last spring's trials. Not only did he make the team, but he then proceeded to dominate the International Skating Union Short Track World Tour season, bagging five gold medals across four events. Talk about making an entrance! It's exciting to see a new face step up like this – it keeps the sport fresh and competitive.
However, the path to glory won't be easy for either Choi or Rim. In-form Canadian skaters are looking to upset the South Korean dominance. Courtney Sarault is a major threat in the women's races, having absolutely crushed the World Tour season, and William Dandjinou is a formidable contender for the men. Dandjinou swept the competition, securing seven individual titles, which included a clean sweep of the 500m, 1,000m, and 1,500m gold medals at the second World Tour stop in Canada last October. This isn't going to be a cakewalk for anyone.
The short track competition kicks off on February 10 at the Milano Ice Skating Arena. The heats in the women's 500m and the men's 1,000m will certainly be exciting to watch. The finals for the women's 1,500m, where Choi will be aiming for her third consecutive gold medal, will conclude the short track events on February 21st. Mark your calendars, folks – you won't want to miss this!
