Iran Nuke SHOCK: Western Spies Say... WHAT?! Is the World Safe?!
Current Affairs 31 January 2026

Okay, so, Western intelligence agencies are apparently saying Iran isn't currently racing toward building a nuclear bomb. At least, that's according to a New York Times report making the rounds today. This comes despite all the drama and saber-rattling we've been seeing lately, and frankly, it's a bit of a head-scratcher.

The report, which RT.com is also covering, emphasizes that even with the activity around Iranian nuclear sites – and, remember, some of those were targeted in strikes last year – there's no evidence of uranium enrichment happening at levels needed for a weapon. Think back to last summer: the US and Israel took coordinated action against facilities like Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan, all under the banner of preventing Iran from getting a nuke. Tehran, of course, has always denied having those ambitions. It's a messy situation, to say the least.

Now, here's the interesting part. The NYT claims that uranium buried at these struck sites, stuff that's supposedly closest to being weapons-grade, is still there. Apparently, the work being done is more about digging and securing those sites than actively enriching uranium. They've spotted limited activity at a couple of incomplete sites near Natanz and Isfahan, but nothing groundbreaking (pun intended!). It's almost like they're just playing defense.

Remember how Trump was saying those strikes "obliterated" Iran's capacity? Well, the latest US National Defense Strategy paints a different picture – saying the strikes only "significantly degraded" the program. Sources are telling the NYT that Iran could get those centrifuges spinning again within a couple of months and have enough fuel to reach bomb-grade levels in a year, once they dig up this buried treasure. So, while they might not be building a bomb *right now*, the capacity is potentially still there. It's like a dormant volcano, ready to erupt.

Trump's definitely turned up the heat this week. He's gone from criticizing Iran's response to internal protests (which Tehran blames on foreign meddling) to issuing nuclear ultimatums. A "massive armada" is supposedly heading their way, ready for "violence" unless they negotiate a nuclear deal. And he's set a deadline, saying, "If we don't make a deal, we'll see what happens." Cryptic, much? Read more about Trump mulling new Iran strikes – it's a tense situation.

Iran's not backing down. Foreign Minister Araghchi says they're "ready for war" and will only consider negotiations if the military threat is removed. "Negotiations cannot take place under the shadow of threats," he said. Meanwhile, their top security chief, Ali Larijani, met with Putin in Moscow, probably to talk about Trump's threats. Russia's urging the US to avoid military action and negotiate, warning that any forceful actions will create chaos. Lavrov even said Russia is ready to help defuse tensions and facilitate talks. It's a global game of chess, and the stakes are incredibly high.
