The concept of Dual citizenship used to be a bit of an oddity, something you'd associate with international spies or jet-setting socialites. I remember when it seemed almost…unpatriotic to consider having another passport. How times have changed.
Second Passport Panic! Countries Slam the Door Shu...
Now, we're seeing a global surge in demand for second passports, even as nations begin to tighten their citizenship regulations. It's a fascinating dynamic, and one driven by a complex mix of factors, ranging from the desire for greater freedom of movement to a sense of unease about the future.
From Europe to the United States, people are actively seeking that second nationality. They want the ability to live and work abroad more easily, travel without visa headaches, and, frankly, have a "Plan B" in an increasingly uncertain world. It's understandable, really. Who *doesn't* want a little more security these days?
While the desire for Dual citizenship is skyrocketing, governments are starting to push back. It's a bit of a cat-and-mouse game. The exact number of dual passport holders is tough to pin down, since most countries don't require citizens to declare additional nationalities. However, the data we do have paints a clear picture: dual nationality is becoming increasingly common.
Consider the UK: their 2021 census showed that 2.1% of residents held dual nationality, double the figure from a decade earlier. And in the US, a recent survey revealed that about six percent of respondents already have more than one passport. That's a significant jump, and it speaks volumes about the shifting priorities of individuals.
It’s not just about convenience, though. As Dominic Volek, head of private clients at Henley & Partners, pointed out, "A second passport has become a Plan B." His firm, which specializes in residence and citizenship options, processed applications from clients representing a staggering 91 different nationalities in 2025 alone. It's no longer just the super-rich; ordinary people are exploring these options.
And guess who's leading the charge? Americans are now the largest group seeking advice from Henley & Partners. Brexit has really fueled a surge in interest from British nationals. But here's the kicker: just as demand is peaking, countries are quietly making it harder to get in. Italy, for example, recently tightened its citizenship by descent rules. Portugal is considering extending its residency requirements, and Sweden and Poland have announced similar plans.
Volek's advice is simple: "If you're eligible by descent, apply now." He's right. These regulations are only going to get stricter, and the costs are likely to go up. The window of opportunity might be closing, so if you're even thinking about a second passport, now is the time to act.
