Morrowind Remake DOOMED?! Bethesda Vet's SHOCKING Confession!
Gaming News 30 January 2026

A wave of nostalgia often washes over the gaming community, and with it, the inevitable clamoring for remakes of beloved classics. *The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind* is no exception. But don't hold your breath for a shiny new version just yet. Bruce Nesmith, a Bethesda veteran of 17 years, just threw a bucket of cold water on the idea. And honestly, he makes some pretty compelling points.

Morrowind Remake DOOMED?! Bethesda Vet's SHOCKING ...

According to Nesmith, speaking frankly on the possibility, Bethesda might not even have the original source code for *Morrowind* anymore. "The problem with doing *Morrowind* is that I bet they don't have the original code," he stated bluntly. That's a pretty fundamental problem, to say the least! He elaborated, "The game is so old. I don't know if the original source code exists anymore. If it does, can you even compile it? When you're looking at *Oblivion*, they still had the code. They could still compile it. Putting the code into the new version of the engine was a possibility." It paints a picture of a technological archeological dig, and the odds of success seem slim.

But even if the code did exist, Nesmith raises another critical question: would modern audiences actually enjoy playing a faithful remake of *Morrowind*? He challenges, "The other thing I would say is go back and play *Morrowind* and tell me that's the game you want to play again." It's a fair point. We all have rose-tinted memories of games that shaped our younger selves, but sometimes, revisiting those games can be… jarring. Let's face it, gaming conventions have evolved significantly in the past two decades.

He doesn't mince words, frankly. "We all have these fond memories of things that were pivotal moments in our gaming fantasy histories that we absolutely move but you go back and play a 20 year old game and you will cringe." He even confesses to being partly responsible for cringe-worthy moments in *Oblivion*, which benefited from a recent remaster. But, as he rightly observes, "The further back you go, the more that's going to be an issue. The reality of playing *Morrowind* would not stand the test of time, in my opinion." I have to say, I tend to agree with that. I fired up *Morrowind* last year, and while the world is still amazing, the gameplay felt clunky and dated.

So, what does Nesmith suggest? Instead of a remake, he advocates for creating new content within the *Morrowind* setting. "Let's revisit the lands of *Morrowind* and do a new story," he proposes, envisioning a fresh narrative that incorporates beloved elements while avoiding outdated mechanics. Think a new adventure set in Vvardenfell, but built from the ground up with modern sensibilities. "You can include the giant crab palace and all of that stuff but make it new and avoid all the things that would not have survived the test of time." That sounds like a much more appealing prospect, honestly. It allows for the magic of *Morrowind* to live on without being shackled to its past.

Of course, opinions are divided. Last year, Eurogamer's Jim Trinca argued for a remake, highlighting *Morrowind's* unique setting but acknowledging its aged technology. But Nesmith's perspective, coming from within Bethesda itself, carries significant weight. Only time will tell if Bethesda revisits *Morrowind*, but if they do, they'll have to consider whether they're creating a love letter to the past or a viable game for the future.
