Melania Doc Cost Controversy! Ratner & FLOTUS Fire Back!
Movies & TV Series 30 January 2026

The premiere of "Melania," the Amazon MGM documentary, at the Kennedy Center was certainly a spectacle, a glitzy affair befitting its subject, the former First Lady. But even amidst the champagne and flashing cameras, the elephant in the room – or perhaps it should be the elephant-sized price tag – couldn't be ignored.

Melania Doc Cost Controversy! Ratner & FLOTUS Fire...

Director Brett Ratner and Melania Trump herself addressed the elephant head-on, defending the project's reported $40 million production budget and $35 million marketing spend. That's a cool $75 million all told! Ratner, known for his blockbuster sensibilities, argued the money was essential to achieving the film's high cinematic quality. "We spent more money on music in this than I did on 'Rush Hour,'" he exclaimed to Deadline, emphasizing the top-tier talent involved and the sheer scale of the production. It does make you wonder just *what* kind of soundtrack they've put together!

The former First Lady echoed Ratner's sentiments, pointing to the dual release strategy – a theatrical run followed by streaming on Amazon Prime. This, she argued, justified the investment. "We achieved what we wanted to achieve for cinematic viewing, in the theaters, and then we have a doc series coming out," she said, praising Amazon's "fantastic" team. It's clear she's proud of the final product, but one has to wonder if that pride is enough to justify the hefty price tag in the eyes of the public.

The problem, of course, is that $75 million is an astronomical sum for a documentary, especially considering the financial realities of the genre. Documentaries rarely recoup such investments, even with streaming revenue. This has inevitably led to accusations that Amazon's deep pockets were being used to, shall we say, ingratiate themselves with the Trumps. As Jimmy Kimmel wryly put it, it's essentially a "$75 million bribe." Maybe a bit harsh, but you can see where he's coming from.

Amazon certainly pulled out all the stops for the premiere. The name "MELANIA" dominated the Kennedy Center, plastered across the black (yes, black) carpet and giant posters. It felt more like a Hollywood blockbuster premiere than a documentary screening. But will this lavish marketing campaign translate into viewership? That remains to be seen. And without any advance screenings for critics, a pretty unusual move for a project of this scale, there's even more speculation about what exactly Amazon is trying to accomplish here.

When asked how she would measure the project's success, Melania Trump offered a simple, almost detached assessment: "For myself, it's already successful, what we did, and it will speak for itself." That's certainly one way to look at it. The film, reportedly focused on the 20 days leading up to what *would* have been Trump's second inauguration, promises a behind-the-scenes look at a unique moment in American history. Whether it's worth $75 million, well, that's something viewers will have to decide for themselves.
