Trump Claims Putin Truce?! Will Kyiv Survive The Week?!
Current Affairs 29 January 2026

Well, folks, here's a headline I never thought I'd be writing: Former President Trump claims that Vladimir Putin has agreed to hold off on attacking Kyiv for a week, specifically citing the brutal cold snap hitting Ukraine. Yes, you read that right. According to Trump, Putin's heart (or perhaps his pragmatism) has been touched by the plummeting temperatures, which are expected to reach a bone-chilling -30C. It's certainly a… unique development, to say the least.

Trump Claims Putin Truce?! Will Kyiv Survive The W...

Trump made the announcement during what was described as a cabinet meeting (remember those?), adding that this temporary ceasefire was, in part, thanks to progress in US-brokered talks between Kyiv and Moscow. He used the phrase "a lot of progress" which, as we all know, can mean just about anything. The war in Ukraine, now approaching its fifth year, has become a grinding, devastating conflict, so any sign of de-escalation, even a weather-related one, is arguably welcome.

However, it's crucial to inject a dose of reality here. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy himself warned of impending Russian attacks on energy infrastructure just a day prior. Given the past, it’s wise to take any promises from Russia, especially those relayed through a third party, with a hefty grain of salt. Six people were killed in attacks across central and southern Ukraine on Thursday alone, which paints a grim picture that belies the optimistic tone Trump is setting. It's hard to reconcile those casualties with the idea of a benevolent Putin putting things on hold for a bit.

The timing, of course, is interesting. Is this a genuine attempt at some form of humanitarian pause, or is it a calculated move by Putin to perhaps regroup or reposition his forces under the cover of extreme weather? Or, dare I say it, is it simply a public relations stunt designed to soften Russia’s image on the world stage? Let's not forget, we're talking about a conflict that has been marked by misinformation and strategic ambiguity from all sides.

Frankly, while the idea of any respite for the people of Kyiv shivering through this cold spell is appealing, I can't help but feel a deep skepticism. As someone who's covered this conflict for years, I've learned that the reality on the ground rarely matches the pronouncements made in Washington or Moscow. We'll have to wait and see if Putin's alleged promise holds true and, more importantly, what happens after this "week of peace" is over. Because sadly, the underlying issues driving this war haven't magically disappeared with the falling thermometer.
