Starmer's SHOCK China U-Turn: What Does It Mean for UK?!
Current Affairs 29 January 2026

After years of frosty relations, it seems the UK and China are trying to thaw things out. Prime Minister Keir Starmer touched down in Beijing this week, marking the first visit by a British premier in a solid eight years. He wasn't just there for the sights, of course; serious discussions were on the agenda with President Xi Jinping at the grandiose Great Hall of the People.

The buzz around the capital is that the two nations are looking to seal several deals later today. Starmer, who took the helm in July 2024, is clearly looking to give British businesses a shot in the arm amidst a pretty sluggish domestic economy. He’s brought a veritable army of support with him – over 50 top business execs and heads of major cultural institutions are part of the delegation. Makes sense; you don't send one scout when you're hunting for a prize.

Before sitting down with President Xi, Starmer also chatted with Zhao Leji, chairman of China’s National People's Congress. That’s basically the head honcho of their legislature. It’s all part of the diplomatic dance, I suppose.

Let's be honest, the road to this point hasn't been smooth. Relations have definitely taken a hit lately. The elephant in the room is, well, a few elephants. There are growing worries about alleged Chinese espionage in Britain, not to mention China's stance on the ongoing war in Ukraine. And, of course, the erosion of freedoms in Hong Kong, a place with a special connection to Britain, hasn’t helped. I remember watching the handover back in '97; it's sad to see how things have changed there.

Then you've got the wider global mess created by the trade disruptions under the previous US administration. Trump’s policies threw a wrench into everything, adding another layer of complication to an already complex relationship. It'll be interesting to see if these latest talks really signal a shift in direction. Can Starmer and Xi find common ground amidst all this? Only time will tell, but it's a story I'll be keeping a close eye on.
