A disturbing incident unfolded in Brooklyn Wednesday night as a driver allegedly intentionally rammed his car into the Chabad Lubavitch world headquarters. Footage circulating online shows a gray Honda sedan repeatedly crashing into the side entrance of the iconic building at 770 Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights, causing significant damage to the wooden doors.
Synagogue Attack: Driver's 'Intentional' Ramming C...
According to reports, the incident occurred around 8:45 PM. Witnesses say the driver yelled for people to move before accelerating towards the building. "A car just drove into the side doors of 770 at Chabad Headquarters," tweeted Yaacov Behrman of Chabad Lubavitch. "Baruch Hashem, there are no injuries. Witnesses report the driver yelled for people to move as he drove in. It appears intentional."
After the repeated impacts, the driver exited the vehicle and was immediately confronted by onlookers. A separate video captures him shouting, "I dunno, it slipped! It slipped, you f*ing ahole!" while gesturing towards the car. I've seen enough of these videos online to know that, while claims of "it slipped" are common, they are rarely believable in this context.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the synagogue was quickly evacuated as a precaution. The NYPD responded swiftly, taking the suspect into custody after he was identified by those at the scene. Law enforcement has not yet released the suspect's identity or any information about a potential motive, but an investigation is underway. The NYPD's Emergency Service Unit and Bomb Squad were also called in to thoroughly sweep the vehicle for any potential weapons or explosives. Better safe than sorry, especially in these situations.
Rabbi Chanina Sperlin also confirmed the incident via Twitter: "A car intentionally drove into the side doors of 770 Eastern Parkway, Chabad-Lubavitch world headquarters, in Crown Heights. There are no injuries. Police have the driver in custody and are investigating his motives."
The targeted building is more than just a synagogue; it’s the global headquarters for the Chabad-Lubavitch movement, a vital center for Jewish life and outreach since 1940. The incident has understandably caused considerable distress within the community, and police have established a perimeter around the area, urging the public to stay away while they conduct their investigation.
It remains to be seen what the motive behind this shocking act was, but the fact that it's being investigated as a possible intentional act is definitely concerning. We'll continue to follow this story as it develops and provide updates as they become available.
