Well, folks, it seems like even superheroes aren't immune to the long arm of censorship. AdHoc Studio's much-anticipated "Dispatch," a superhero workplace comedy from Telltale Games alumni, has finally arrived on the Nintendo Switch, but it's not quite the uncensored experience fans were hoping for. In fact, some are pretty steamed about it.
Nintendo Censors Game?! Devs Stunned by 'Content C...
For those not in the know, "Dispatch" isn't exactly your average kid-friendly superhero game. It dives into mature themes, including nudity, implied sexual scenarios, and some fairly colorful language. On PC and PlayStation 5, players have the option to toggle a censorship filter on or off, allowing them to tailor the experience to their comfort level. However, Switch players are discovering they don't have that luxury.
The word on the street – or rather, the internet – is that the Nintendo Switch version of "Dispatch" is permanently censored. We’re talking censor bars plastered strategically across the screen and audio bleeped out, with no way to revert to the uncensored version. Apparently, this is all due to Nintendo's "content criteria," a broad term that seems to be the go-to explanation when mature games get the sanitizing treatment on their platform.
This is a real shame, especially considering how positively the uncensored version of the game has been received. IGN's Rebekah Valentine, for instance, awarded "Dispatch" a stellar 9/10, highlighting its "sharp-witted workplace comedy" and "lovably aggravating cast." It seems like a significant part of that charm might be lost in translation when you’re constantly staring at blurred-out pixels. Imagine watching "Deadpool" with every other line muted – you get the idea.
It does raise some interesting questions about platform holders and their responsibility to provide a space for artistic expression, even when that expression pushes boundaries. While protecting younger audiences is important, completely stripping away player choice feels heavy-handed. And let’s be honest, most Switch owners aren’t exactly toddlers glued to their consoles. It's a diverse audience, and arguably, they deserve the option to experience the game as the developers intended.
For now, if you’re looking for the full, uncensored "Dispatch" experience, you’ll have to stick to PC or PlayStation 5. An Xbox version hasn't surfaced yet, so we'll have to wait and see what approach Microsoft takes. It seems like in the wild world of gaming, even superheroes can't escape the censor's red pen. Stay tuned, folks, because this story is definitely still developing.
