Netflix's 'Gundam' Movie: Sweeney & Centineo?! What Happens Next!

Well, folks, it looks like Netflix might be about to add another heavyweight contender to its streaming arsenal. Word on the street, according to Deadline's sources, is that the streaming giant is circling Legendary's live-action "Gundam" movie. And yes, you read that right – *Gundam*. As in, giant robots smashing into each other in space.

Netflix's 'Gundam' Movie: Sweeney & Centineo?! Wha...

This isn't just some low-budget indie flick either. The film already boasts a couple of pretty big names attached: Sydney Sweeney (of "Euphoria" and "The White Lotus" fame) and Noah Centineo (remember "To All the Boys I've Loved Before?" Yeah, him). Directing duties are falling to Jim Mickle, who impressed many with his work on Netflix's "Sweet Tooth." So, we’re talking about some serious talent behind the camera as well.

Neither Netflix nor Legendary were immediately available for comment, which, let's be honest, is pretty standard procedure in Hollywood until deals are completely locked down. But where there’s smoke, there’s usually fire, and the buzz surrounding this project is definitely getting louder.

For those unfamiliar, "Gundam" is *the* granddaddy of mecha anime. The franchise, co-developed by Legendary and Bandai Namco Filmworks, is a sprawling epic set in a future where humanity has spread across the stars. It’s about war, political intrigue, and, of course, those magnificent mobile suits – giant robots piloted by brave (and often conflicted) individuals. Mickle himself is writing the script in addition to directing, which gives me a little more faith in the project overall. He and Linda Moran are also producing via their Nightshade company.

Plot details are still tightly under wraps, but we know it's meant to be the first *live-action* adaptation. That's a big deal. We're talking about bringing a hugely influential animated series, born in 1979 from the mind of Yoshiyuki Tomino, to life in a whole new way. It’s a series that spawned 83 animated series and movies, and it's a merchandising titan pulling in $600 million a year. So, the potential upside for Netflix is massive.

Now, as someone who spent a good chunk of their childhood building Gundam model kits, I’ll admit to being cautiously optimistic. Live-action adaptations of anime are notoriously tricky. But with the talent involved and the backing of both Legendary and Netflix, this "Gundam" movie has a real shot at being something special. Let's just hope they get those robot fights right. That's all that really matters, right?
