Trump on the Brink? Democrats Demand DHS Chief's Ouster!
Current Affairs 28 January 2026

Washington D.C. - The political temperature just got a whole lot hotter here in Washington. Leading House Democrats are now openly threatening to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem if President Trump doesn't give her the boot himself. This isn't just political posturing; it's a full-blown ultimatum following a string of fatal shootings involving federal agents, and it could have serious consequences for the administration.

Trump on the Brink? Democrats Demand DHS Chief's O...

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, along with his deputies Katherine Clark and Pete Aguilar, didn't mince words in their joint statement on Tuesday. They demanded an "immediate end" to what they called the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) "violence," insisting that Noem be fired. The kicker? They warned that if Trump doesn't act, they'll initiate Impeachment proceedings in the House. "The easy way or the hard way," they stated, leaving little room for interpretation.

The ultimatum stems from the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, both U.S. citizens, in separate incidents involving ICE agents in Minneapolis. These tragedies, which occurred during an increasingly aggressive immigration enforcement operation, have thrown a harsh spotlight on Homeland Security's tactics. Frankly, it’s not just Democrats who are concerned. Even some Republicans are calling for Noem's resignation, signaling a growing unease with the situation.

Representative Robin Kelly of Illinois is leading the charge for Impeachment, and her efforts are gaining momentum. According to congressional aides, she's now garnered 162 co-sponsors, with a significant surge of 51 joining since Pretti's death. While no Republicans have formally signed on to the impeachment articles, dozens have publicly called for investigations into the shootings. This is a key indicator; the cracks are starting to show.

Minneapolis has been a powder keg for days, with demonstrations erupting in response to the controversial federal immigration push in Minnesota. DHS has deployed thousands of agents, in what they describe as their largest interior operation to date, targeting undocumented immigrants. It’s a tense situation, and the optics aren’t good, especially when lives are lost.

However, President Trump is standing by his Homeland Security chief. When asked on Wednesday if Noem would resign as he left the White House, Trump responded with a firm "No." He later told Fox News that he has "confidence" in her, praising her efforts to "close up the border" as a "tremendous success." This sets the stage for a major showdown between the White House and House Democrats.

It's worth remembering that impeaching a cabinet official is incredibly rare. In fact, it's only happened twice before in US history. The Republican-led House impeached Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas two years ago, only for the Senate to dismiss the charges. And going further back, War Secretary William Belknap was impeached in 1876, only to be acquitted as well. This suggests that even if the House votes to impeach Noem, the odds of her being removed from office by the Senate remain slim, but this political battle will be one to watch. The ramifications could be far-reaching.
