Amazon is at it again. Just when you thought the tech giant might be done trimming the fat, news broke today of another massive round of layoffs. This time, a staggering 16,000 positions are on the chopping block, bringing the grand total to around 30,000 in just the last four months. Ouch. And, according to some reports, at least one team got a sneak peek at the bad news thanks to an accidental email. Not exactly the smooth, corporate rollout they were likely aiming for.
Amazon Layoffs: Shocking New Cuts! What Will Happe...
The official word comes, as it usually does these days, via a company memo. Beth Galetti, Senior Vice President of People Experience (a title that probably doesn't offer much comfort to the soon-to-be-unemployed), announced the cuts, framing them as a necessary step to "strengthen our organization." It’s the classic corporate euphemism, isn't it? Somehow, making thousands jobless is spun as a positive for the company.
According to Reuters, this latest bloodletting will hit a variety of departments, including Prime Video (wonder if that means less investment in their shows?), Amazon Web Services (AWS, their cash cow), retail, and even HR. You know it's a big deal when even the human resources department isn't safe. It really makes you wonder what's going on behind the scenes.
"The reductions we are making today will impact approximately 16,000 roles across Amazon, and we’re again working hard to support everyone whose role is impacted," Galetti wrote in the memo. She outlined a plan to offer US-based employees 90 days to search for new roles internally, followed by severance packages, outplacement services, and health insurance benefits for those who don't find new positions or choose not to look. It's standard procedure, but it's still a rough situation for everyone involved.
Galetti was quick to reassure everyone that these mass layoffs aren't intended to become the new normal. "But just as we always have, every team will continue to evaluate the ownership, speed, and capacity to invent for customers, and make adjustments as appropriate," she added. Basically, expect things to keep changing, because, you know, "a world that’s changing faster than ever.” It all sounds a bit… uncertain, doesn't it? While Amazon insists on supporting its employees with severance packages, outplacement services, and health insurance benefits, let's hope this is the last of the layoffs for a while.
