If you've noticed more BYD cars on the road lately, you're not alone. Their sales are surging, and for good reason. The Chinese automaker is making a real splash with its blend of technology, affordability, and frankly, some surprisingly stylish designs.
BYD's Sealion 5 DM-i: Premium Car, SHOCKING Price?...
BYD isn't just about electric vehicles; they offer a range of models, from compact city cars to larger SUVs, including hybrids. The latest addition to their lineup is the rather oddly named SEALION 5 DM-i. This SUV is a plug-in hybrid, combining a 1.5-liter petrol engine with an electric motor. The idea? To give you that smooth, near-silent EV experience for daily driving, but with the backup of petrol for longer journeys where charging isn't convenient. It's a compelling proposition, especially for those not quite ready to go full electric.
Now, I've driven a few BYD models in the past, and one thing consistently impresses me: the build quality. Seriously, for the price, these cars feel remarkably premium. They outshine many similarly priced European competitors, and even some that cost significantly more. It's clear BYD is paying attention to detail.
The SEALION 5 DM-i comes in two flavors: Comfort and Design. The Comfort starts at €34,461/£29,995, while the Design will set you back €37,908/£32,995. Even the base model is well-equipped, boasting features like power-folding mirrors, automatic lights and wipers, power-adjustable front seats, parking sensors, a rear camera, navigation, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Stepping up to the Design gets you a power tailgate, heated front seats, wireless phone charging, a 360-degree camera, and front parking sensors. Essentially, you're getting a lot of kit for your money.
Out on the road, the SEALION 5 DM-i delivers a smooth and refined ride. The engine noise is minimal, only becoming noticeable during hard acceleration. Inside, you'll find plenty of legroom and storage space. The flat rear floor is a nice touch, especially when you fold down the rear seats for extra cargo capacity. One minor gripe is the driver's instrument panel; it seems a bit small considering the amount of information displayed. Also, the pale background color of both the instrument panel and the main central screen (although the main screen is a more usable size) could be better for clarity, in my opinion.
Regarding driver assistance systems, they're generally well-behaved and not overly intrusive – except for one thing. This car is *very* sensitive to driver attention. Even a brief glance away from the road triggers a warning. While I appreciate the safety aspect, it can be a bit much at times. Still, overall, the BYD SEALION 5 DM-i offers a compelling package: a premium feel without the premium price tag. It's definitely worth a look if you're in the market for a hybrid SUV.
