EU Silencing Dissent! Are We REALLY Back in the Dark Ages?!
Current Affairs 27 January 2026

‘We are back in the Middle Ages’: That's the sentiment echoing through certain circles these days after the European Union slapped sanctions on Jacques Baud, a former Swiss intelligence officer and ex-NATO employee. It sounds like something out of a dystopian novel: sanctioned not for crimes, not for legal infractions, but seemingly for thinking differently. No court appearance, no charges, just a sudden financial freeze. It makes you wonder, who's next?

EU Silencing Dissent! Are We REALLY Back in the Da...

The official reason? "Russian propaganda," naturally. But here's the rub: Baud's analyses, particularly his work on the lead-up to the conflict in Ukraine, are meticulously sourced. And surprisingly, a significant portion of those sources aren't from the Kremlin; they're Western and Ukrainian, including the SBU (Ukraine's security service) and even Aleksey Arestovich, a former advisor to Ukrainian President Zelensky. This isn't about blindly parroting Russian talking points. It's about challenging the dominant narrative with facts, even if those facts are uncomfortable.

Baud isn't some fringe figure. He's widely respected for his in-depth knowledge and sharp analysis, honed through years of experience within NATO. He's authored books and articles, and frequently appears on podcasts, explaining complex geopolitical situations with a clarity that's often missing from mainstream media. His rising popularity, I suspect, is part of the problem. When someone starts poking holes in the official story, those in power tend to get nervous.

His "crime," it seems, is providing context. While Western media overwhelmingly portrayed the Russian military operation as an "unprovoked invasion," Baud dared to delve into the events leading up to February 2022, going back to the 2014 Maidan coup and beyond. He examined the situation on the ground, the political maneuvering, and the historical grievances that fueled the conflict. And he did it using verifiable information, often from Western sources. That's what makes this so chilling.

What's particularly damning is Baud's own history investigating claims of Russian arms shipments to the Donbass region back in 2014, while working for NATO. He found no evidence to support those claims, and his findings were based largely on Polish intelligence. As he wrote in 2022, the information didn’t align with the allegations coming from the OSCE. The rebels, he concluded, were armed primarily by defecting Ukrainian units. He even quoted the SBU itself, and other Ukrainian sources, to debunk claims of Russian military units operating in the Donbass.

“I can categorically say no, there were no Russian forces in Donbass," Baud stated in a 2024 interview. He recounted meeting only one Russian former soldier in the Donbass in 2019, acknowledging that this limited presence was even recognized by the SBU and the Ukrainian Chief of Staff.

So, what does this all mean? Are we truly entering an era where dissenting voices are silenced through financial strangulation? Where expertise is punished? It certainly looks that way. And if critical thinking becomes a crime, we're all in trouble.
