DES MOINES, Iowa – President Donald Trump is touching down in Iowa today, and frankly, the timing couldn't be more complicated. The White House is trying to hammer home the message of affordability ahead of the midterm elections, but the shadow of that Minneapolis shooting involving federal immigration officers is still looming large. This marks the second fatal shooting this month involving those officers, and it's understandably stirring up a lot of controversy.
Trump's Iowa Visit: Affordability Push Amid Minnea...
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt says the President will be touring a local business and delivering a speech focused on affordability while he’s here. The event is scheduled for the Horizon Events Center in Clive, just outside Des Moines. I've been to a few events there myself; it's a good-sized venue, perfect for drawing a crowd.
Apparently, Chief of Staff Susie Wiles also mentioned last week that energy policy will be a key talking point during the visit. This trip seems to be part of a larger strategy: get Trump out of Washington weekly to address the concerns of everyday Americans before the midterms. The problem, as always, is staying on message. These crises, like the recent shooting, keep popping up and diverting attention.
The latest incident involves the death of Alex Pretti, an ICU nurse, allegedly shot by federal agents in Minnesota over the weekend. Initial reactions from some within the administration were, to put it mildly, insensitive. The White House, however, has since stated that Trump is awaiting the results of the investigation before commenting further. Smart move, given the current climate.
It’s interesting to note that Trump was last here in Iowa just before July 4th, where he kicked off the 250th-anniversary celebration. That event, though, pretty quickly morphed into a victory lap for his big spending and tax cut package, which had just passed Congress. Republicans are hoping this visit will allow them to steer the narrative back to that tax bill – a cornerstone of their platform as they fight to maintain their majority in November.
"I invited President Trump back to Iowa to highlight the real progress we’ve made: delivering tax relief for working families, securing the border, and growing our economy," said Rep. Zach Nunn, R-Iowa, in a pre-trip statement. "Now we’ve got to keep that momentum going and pass my affordable housing bill, deliver for Iowa’s energy producers, and bring down costs for working families." It’s a standard political playbook, really. Highlight the positives, downplay the negatives.
The White House is definitely trying to use Trump's influence in key swing states. But his tendency to go off-script is always a wild card. Remember that event in Pennsylvania? He downplayed inflation, accused Democrats of using "affordability" as a hoax, and even started complaining about immigrants. It’s hard to predict what he'll say today, but I’m guessing affordability will be mentioned, even if it's not the sole focus. The question is, will he stick to the script this time?
