Volvo's getting ready to shake things up in Europe next year with a new hybrid SUV, and it's one that's already turning heads in China. I'm talking about the XC70 – a name that might sound familiar to long-time Volvo fans. Think of it as the beloved station wagon, reimagined for the modern SUV era. And, importantly, it's coming as a plug-in hybrid. I have to admit, I'm personally a big fan of the plug-in approach, offering the best of both worlds.
Volvo's New Hybrid SUV: What Will It REALLY Cost Y...
The news dropped during the recent launch of the EX60. Volvo Italy CEO Michele Crisci confirmed the rumors, stating that the XC70 is "slated to arrive in Europe, likely next year, pending final confirmation." So, while it's not a done deal just yet, it sounds like Volvo's pretty confident we'll be seeing it on European roads soon.
What's so special about this XC70? Well, for starters, it's not your typical all-electric or gas-guzzling SUV. Volvo’s going hybrid, prioritizing electric driving with a decently sized battery pack, but also including a 60-liter gasoline tank to squash those range anxieties. They're advertising a total range of around 1,200 km, with a solid 212 km achievable on electric power alone. That's perfect for daily commutes and errands, with the gas engine ready for longer trips.
Now, let's talk powertrains. The XC70 will come in both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. The rear-wheel drive model pairs a 1.5-liter turbo gasoline 4-cylinder engine with an electric motor and a 21.2 kWh LFP battery. This setup gives you a combined 318 horsepower and that impressive 1,203 km range. The all-wheel drive version gets even more interesting. It ditches the single electric motor for two (one on each axle) and a bigger 39.6 kWh battery, boosting the total power output to a hefty 462 horsepower. The range is roughly the same, around 1,201 km.
Aesthetically, the XC70 is a looker. It's longer than the XC60, coming in at 4.81 meters, which gives it a more substantial presence. Volvo's known for its clean, minimalist design, and the XC70 definitely follows suit. Inside, expect that familiar Scandinavian design language – uncluttered lines, attention to detail, and an emphasis on creating a comfortable and inviting space. I’m eager to see if the real-world experience matches the initial impressions.
Overall, the XC70 looks like a promising addition to Volvo's lineup. It offers a compelling blend of electric driving, hybrid flexibility, and Volvo's signature style. Next year can't come soon enough!
