Minneapolis Erupts: Federal Agents Fire Again! Will Trump Intervene?!
Current Affairs 25 January 2026

Minneapolis is on edge. Just weeks after one fatal shooting by Federal agents, another has rocked the city, and this time, the victim was a U.S. citizen. The Trump administration is standing by its agents, but video evidence is painting a very different picture, raising serious questions about the escalating tactics being used in what they’re calling a crackdown.

Minneapolis Erupts: Federal Agents Fire Again! Wil...

Flowers and candles now mark the spot where Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse, died on Saturday. He was shot dead by Federal immigration agents, allegedly during a confrontation on an icy road. This comes just weeks after Renee Good, also 37, was killed in her car by an immigration officer. Two deaths, both young people, in such quick succession, has understandably ignited fury and grief.

The official line from the Trump administration is that Pretti assaulted the officers, leaving them no choice but to defend themselves. Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino, appearing on CNN, insisted that Pretti, who was legally carrying a firearm, was the aggressor. "The victims are border patrol agents," Bovino stated. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem doubled down on Fox News, accusing Pretti of obstructing a law enforcement operation, a felony under federal law. She claimed he became aggressive and resisted when agents tried to get him to disengage. This is the narrative they're sticking to.

But here's where it gets complicated. Bystander videos are circulating, and they tell a vastly different story. The videos, though grainy and unsettling, allegedly show Pretti backing away from agents with his hands raised. Then, an officer points a handgun at his back and fires multiple shots. A second agent appears to fire as well. It's disturbing footage, and it directly contradicts the administration's claims of self-defense. I’ve seen the videos, and frankly, they're hard to watch.

This discrepancy has triggered outrage, not just from the public, but also from local law enforcement in Minneapolis and Democratic lawmakers. Darius Reeves, former head of ICE's field office in Baltimore, told Reuters he found the apparent lack of communication between the federal agents deeply concerning. "It's clear no one is communicating, based on my observation of how that team responded," Reeves said. He also noted that one of the officers appeared to take possession of something after the shooting. What exactly, remains unclear. The Justice Department is investigating, but frankly, with the administration already so heavily invested in its narrative, it's hard to feel confident about a truly independent investigation. The pressure is on, and the stakes are incredibly high.
