Donkervoort might not be a household name like Ferrari or Porsche, but for those in the know, the Dutch firm has been churning out some seriously wild, lightweight performance machines for nearly half a century. Their philosophy is simple: keep it small, keep it light, and keep it unbelievably fast. And they usually only have one model in production at a time. Now, the wait is over, because Donkervoort has unleashed their latest creation: the P24 RS, and it's looking like their most extreme car yet.
Donkervoort SHOCKS with Ford GT Engine! What Happe...
At first glance, the P24 RS seems to follow the classic sports car formula: engine up front, driver in the middle, and power to the rear wheels. But dig a little deeper, and you quickly realize this is far more than just another sports car. Underneath that aggressively long hood sits a 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 engine, pumping out a staggering 600 horsepower (447 kW) and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque. And get this – it's mated to a good old-fashioned 5-speed manual transmission. That's right, a proper stick shift in a car built for pure, unadulterated driving pleasure.
The result? A 0-100 km/h sprint in under 2.5 seconds, and 0-200 km/h in a blistering 7.3 seconds. Those numbers are impressive, but they don't tell the whole story. The P24 RS tips the scales at just under 780 kg (approximately 1720 lbs), giving it a power-to-weight ratio of 770 hp per ton. That’s insane. Seriously, that's supercar territory, bordering on hypercar madness. But if 600 hp is a bit much for your Sunday drive (or track day, I suppose), you can dial it back to 400 or 500 hp. The adjustable Tractive dampers and traction control also tailor themselves to the chosen power output.
What's particularly interesting is Donkervoort's choice of engine. They previously relied on Audi's turbocharged five-cylinder engines, which are legendary in their own right. This time, however, they've turned to Ford, sourcing a modified version of the V6 found in the previous-generation Ford GT and various Raptor models. The key word here is "modified." The turbos aren't standard Ford fare. Donkervoort teamed up with Van Der Lee Turbo Systems to develop a completely custom turbocharger setup, specifically tailored to the P24 RS's unique needs. "Instead of using an off-the-shelf turbo from Ford or Audi, we have the option of creating a completely custom, tailor-made turbo for us," explained CEO Denis Donkervoort. "We said: Our total weight is under 800 kilos, the power is roughly 600 horsepower. But we want two things: no turbo lag and very sensitive throttle response."
You might be wondering, "Why switch from a five-cylinder to a V6? Doesn't that add weight?" According to Denis Donkervoort, the decision was driven by customer demand. "There was a very clear demand from customers: don't reduce the number of cylinders. That made things easier." Fair enough! Given the P24 RS's low-slung design, minimal weight, and open-wheel front end, it's safe to assume it will corner like it's on rails. Donkervoort claims that brave (or perhaps slightly unhinged) drivers can achieve up to 2.3 G of lateral acceleration. That takes some serious commitment.
