Colombo – England skipper Harry Brook didn't mince words after his team's five-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the second ODI, blasting the pitch at the R Premadasa Stadium as "probably the worst" he's ever played on. It's a pretty strong statement, especially considering Brook is only 26 and has seen his fair share of Cricket grounds around the world already. But, hey, he was pretty clear about how he felt.
Brook Blasts "Worst Ever" Pitch! Cricket World Stu...
Now, despite Brook's less-than-glowing review, England managed to pull off a win – a significant one at that. This victory marked the first time a chasing team has won at this particular ground in a staggering 11 ODIs. Talk about breaking a streak! Joe Root's cool-headed 75 was absolutely key, guiding England to a successful chase of 220. You could see the relief on the faces of the English players after that final run.
The match itself was a bit unusual. England, clearly sensing the nature of the pitch, deployed an unprecedented amount of spin. I mean, we're talking about 40.3 overs bowled by spinners! That's a record, surpassing even the 36 overs they bowled against Pakistan way back in 1985. It was also the first time England have ever fielded six spinners in an ODI – a clear indication of how heavily the pitch was favoring the slower bowlers. Reports indicate that the spin generated was actually 15% higher than in the first ODI, which is a massive increase in just a few days.
And Brook wasn’t alone in his assessment. Root, ever the diplomat, described the surface as "very difficult" and "not a good wicket for ODI Cricket." But Brook was far more direct. "The pitch is probably the worst pitch I've ever played on," he said during the post-match presentation. "You had to go out there and adapt as quickly as possible and try to get off strike and get the other batter on strike." It sounds like it required some serious mental fortitude and quick thinking out there.
Despite the challenging conditions, Brook was obviously thrilled with the win. "It's nice to get a win away from home on a tough surface - we are happy to get the victory," he acknowledged. He also showered praise on his bowlers for their "amazing job" in ending England's 11-ODI winless streak, a weight that had clearly been hanging over the team. Special mention, of course, went to Root, whose innings was described as masterful. His application, footwork, and ability to pick the Sri Lankan spinners were, according to Brook, instrumental in England's chase. "He [Root] is an awesome player and his ability to get off strike and put the bad ball away when they slightly miss is awesome," Brook added. Root’s knock not only secured the win, but also leveled the ODI series, setting up what should be a cracking decider.
