ANN ARBOR, MI – Yaxel Lendeborg put on a show Friday night, leading No. 3 Michigan to a decisive 74-62 victory over rival Ohio State. Lendeborg's dominant performance, featuring 18 points and nine rebounds, was a clear difference-maker as the Wolverines pulled away in the second half. It was one of those games where you could just *feel* the energy shift when he was on the court.
Michigan Star's Injury Shocks Fans! Season Over?!
Morez Johnson chipped in with 12 points of his own, contributing to a balanced Michigan attack that ultimately overwhelmed the Buckeyes. After a tight first half, Michigan (now 18-1, 8-1 in the Big Ten) really asserted themselves, going on a 21-6 run that effectively sealed the win. That run, honestly, was the turning point. Ohio State just couldn't seem to answer.
Ohio State (13-6, 5-3) actually hung tough for a while, even managing to tie the game up on nine separate occasions. John Mobley Jr. had a stellar performance, leading the Buckeyes with 22 points. He really carried them in the first half, racking up 14 points while Michigan held a slim 33-30 lead. Early in the second half, Mobley even sparked a bit of momentum, hitting a three-pointer and then assisting on another for Christoph Tilly, giving Ohio State a six-point advantage. That's when things got interesting.
Michigan coach Dusty May called a timeout, and whatever he said in that huddle clearly worked. The Wolverines responded with an 11-0 run, transforming what had been a nail-biter, full of lead changes (twelve in total!), into a comfortable double-digit victory. Freshman Trey McKenney also had a solid night for Michigan, adding 12 points, while Aday Mara contributed 11 points and an impressive four blocks. For Ohio State, Tilly ended up with 17 points, and Bruce Thornton scored 10 before unfortunately having to leave the game with an ankle injury late in the contest. Hopefully, he'll be back on the court soon.
The game also marked the Ohio State debut of Puff Johnson, who joined the team just a week prior. Johnson, who previously played at North Carolina and Penn State, was granted eligibility after obtaining a temporary restraining order. It's always interesting to see players find new opportunities, and hopefully, this one works out for him.
Before the game, there was a special ceremony honoring Trey Burke, the 2013 AP Player of the Year. His No. 3 jersey was raised to the rafters of Crisler Center, joining other Michigan legends like Glen Rice, the 1989 national champion. It was a really cool moment, and you could feel the history in the building. It's important to remember and celebrate these legends.
Looking ahead, Ohio State will be back in action, hosting Penn State on Monday night. Michigan, meanwhile, has a tough matchup ahead, facing No. 7 Nebraska on Tuesday night. That should be a good one!
