Feslalí Festival: Is Sustainable Farming the Future?! See the Photos!
Current Affairs 23 January 2026

Alcalalí, Spain is buzzing with anticipation as it prepares to host the tenth annual Feslalí festival, kicking off February 1st and running until the 22nd. For a decade, this charming municipality in the Marina Alta region has used the festival to showcase its unique landscape, agricultural heritage, and the strong sense of community that defines it. But this year, there's a noticeable shift, a turning of the page as they say.

Feslalí Festival: Is Sustainable Farming the Futur...

This anniversary edition marks a significant change, with the humble Carob tree stepping into the spotlight as the festival's central theme. It’s a deliberate move, spearheaded by the local council, that aims to link Feslalí more closely to sustainability, responsible land management, and the long-term future of agriculture in the region. In essence, it's about adapting and evolving.

Feslalí has always been a popular gathering point for locals and tourists alike. Initially, the festival was deeply intertwined with the iconic almond trees and their stunning blossoms. I remember attending a few years back, and the sheer beauty of the almond orchards in full bloom was breathtaking. It really did wonders for revitalizing local farming, boosting small businesses, and drawing visitors to the inland area during the quieter winter months. The almond blossom practically became the festival's emblem.

However, the landscape has changed dramatically. The arrival of Xylella fastidiosa, a devastating plant disease, and the subsequent measures to contain it, which unfortunately involved the widespread removal of almond trees, have profoundly altered Alcalalí’s agricultural landscape. This tough situation has forced a serious re-evaluation of the festival’s focus and its overall role in the local economy.

The Alcalalí Town Council hasn't been sitting idle. They've spent the past year developing a comprehensive strategy focused on revitalizing the cultivation and commercial potential of the Carob tree. This initiative has been backed by a detailed technical study, conducted in collaboration with local farmers and agricultural experts. The goal is clear: find a sustainable path forward.

The tenth edition of Feslalí will unfold over four weekends, packed with events designed to engage, educate, and entertain. The carob tree will be the common thread, explored through diverse activities that touch on agriculture, culture, the landscape, and future economic opportunities.

Expect to see a carob-based sweets competition (I'm already intrigued!), the second annual "Feslalí. February is Alcalalí" quick painting contest, ethnobotanical walks, birdwatching excursions, and hands-on workshops focused on traditional crafts like pottery, soap-making, and palm weaving. Plus, there'll be plenty of music, delicious food, dance, and communal gatherings, all designed to foster a sense of community and celebrate local culture. The festival culminates on February 21st and 22nd with the Fair of Trades and Products of the Land, featuring over 30 stands showcasing local and regional products, live craft demonstrations, children's workshops, and a full schedule of performances. It’s a celebration worth experiencing firsthand.
