Well, folks, the numbers are in, and they paint a pretty clear picture: Nintendo is still king. Circana's full-year report for 2025 confirms what many of us suspected – the Nintendo Switch 2 absolutely dominated U.S. console sales this past year. It snagged the top spot in both units and dollars, proving the hype was real.

According to analyst Mat Piscatella's data, the Switch 2 moved a whopping 4.4 million units. To put that into perspective, that's not just beating the competition; it's outperforming the original Nintendo Switch's launch-aligned sales. Think about that for a second. It's quite a feat. The consistent buzz around the console since its release clearly translated into impressive sales figures. Meanwhile, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles, let's just say they're showing their age a bit.
It wasn't just the console itself that was flying off the shelves. The report also highlighted that the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller was the best-selling accessory of the year. Makes sense – gotta have those extra buttons for ultimate gaming precision, right?
The U.S. games market as a whole saw a slight uptick, generating $60.7 billion in sales, a 1% increase year-over-year. Hardware spending, driven by the Switch 2's success, jumped a significant 9% to $5.4 billion for the year. December, as always, was a huge month, contributing $7.8 billion to the total.
Piscatella pointed out on Bluesky that the Switch 2's 4.4 million units represent a 94% increase compared to the original Switch at the same point after launch, and a 35% lead over the PlayStation 4. But, hold on – the Game Boy Advance still holds the crown as the fastest-selling hardware platform after seven months. Nostalgia is a powerful thing, folks.
Software spending also saw a boost, particularly in subscription services, which grew by a massive 24% year-over-year. Game Pass and PlayStation Plus, anyone? Battlefield 6 took the crown as the best-selling game of the year, but Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 snagged the top spot in December. Its availability on Game Pass is a bit of a wrinkle, though, potentially skewing the Xbox sales figures.
Fortnite continues its reign as a cultural phenomenon, boasting the highest total active users across PlayStation and Xbox. Apparently, over half of all active users on those platforms jumped into the Battle Bus at least once in 2025. Can't escape the lure of those victory royales!
Rounding out the top five best-selling games were NBA 2K26, Borderlands 4, Monster Hunter: Wilds, and, as mentioned, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. Other notable titles included The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion: Remastered (proving that some games truly are timeless), Elden Ring: Nightreign, and Pokémon Legends: Z-A. And let's not forget Grand Theft Auto V, still hanging in there at No. 20 as everyone impatiently taps their feet waiting for GTA VI. It's going to be an interesting year, that's for sure!
