Ubisoft SHOCK: Prince of Persia REMAKE Canceled! What's Next?!
Gaming News 21 January 2026

Ouch. That's probably the sound echoing through Ubisoft headquarters right now. In a major shakeup, the gaming giant has announced a significant "organisational, operational and portfolio reset," which, in layman's terms, means some big changes are coming – and not everyone's happy about it.

Ubisoft SHOCK: Prince of Persia REMAKE Canceled! W...

The most painful casualty? The long-awaited, and frankly quite troubled, remake of *Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time*. Yes, after years of development woes, multiple delays, and shifting studios, it's officially been canned. I remember when they first announced this remake – the initial reveal wasn't exactly met with universal praise, and it seems like the project never really recovered from that initial stumble.

But the Prince isn't alone. Ubisoft is also axing four unannounced titles – three new IPs and a mobile game – bringing the total of cancelled projects to six. This isn't just about one troubled remake; it's a full-scale strategic realignment.

According to Ubisoft, this dramatic reset is driven by a more selective AAA market, an increasingly competitive shooter landscape (surprise, surprise!), and the ever-growing challenge of creating new brands in the face of rising development costs. The company argues that while exceptional AAA games have more financial potential than ever, they need to drastically change how they operate to deliver that quality at a competitive price.

So, what's the plan? Ubisoft is reorganizing around five creative houses, each specializing in specific genres and responsible for various Ubisoft IPs. Think of it as a more streamlined, focused approach. They're also doubling down on "Open World Adventures and GaaS-native experiences," backed by investments in generative AI and other cutting-edge tech. This new structure is expected to be in place by early April.

Adding insult to injury, seven other unannounced games are being delayed, one pushed all the way into Fiscal Year 27. Ubisoft claims this is to ensure they meet "enhanced quality benchmarks," but it’s hard not to see this as a sign of internal restructuring and a more cautious approach to releasing new titles. While the specific games remain under wraps, one is reportedly the heavily anticipated, though still shrouded in mystery, *Splinter Cell* remake. Here's hoping Sam Fisher doesn't stay in the shadows for too much longer.

The gaming world is a brutal place, and Ubisoft's move highlights the immense pressure developers face to deliver hit after hit. While these changes are undoubtedly painful in the short term, they may be necessary for the company to thrive in the long run. Only time will tell if this major reset will actually pay off.
