Raducanu's Australian Open Nightmare: Career in Jeopardy?!
Sports 21 January 2026

Emma Raducanu's Australian Open campaign came to an abrupt end in the second round, as she fell to a disappointing defeat against Austria's Anastasia Potapova. The Briton, who was aiming to reach the third round in Melbourne for the second year running, appeared out of sorts throughout the match, ultimately losing 7-6 (7-3) 6-2 to the world number 55.

Raducanu's Australian Open Nightmare: Career in Je...

Raducanu, seeded 28th, simply didn't look herself out there. Her movement appeared sluggish, her mood seemed flat, and unforced errors plagued her game from start to finish. It was a far cry from the player who captivated the world with her stunning US Open triumph back in 2021. While she managed a first-round victory against Mananchaya Sawangkaew, a player ranked nearly 200 places below her, the cracks were already starting to show.

It's worth remembering that Raducanu's off-season was hampered by a foot injury. She didn't return to hitting sessions until late December, which is hardly ideal preparation for a Grand Slam. You could see it in her performance against Potapova – a lack of sharpness and match fitness that ultimately proved costly. The first set was, frankly, a bit of a mess for both players. It opened with five consecutive breaks of serve, a testament to the nerves and inconsistency on display. Raducanu managed to edge ahead, serving for the set at 5-4, but was immediately broken back, allowing Potapova to seize control in the tie-break.

Potapova took a rather lengthy break after the first set, and whatever she did seemed to work. She came out firing in the second, breaking Raducanu twice to establish a commanding 3-0 lead. While Raducanu managed to grab a break back herself, she simply couldn't maintain any momentum. Potapova cruised to victory from there, leaving a subdued Raducanu to make a hasty exit from the court. The potential third-round clash with world number one Aryna Sabalenka was something many were looking forward to; this loss, however, is a sobering reminder of where Raducanu's game currently stands.

It wasn't a great day for British tennis overall, either. Qualifier Arthur Fery also suffered a second-round defeat, losing in straight sets to Argentina's Tomas Martin Etcheverry. So, while there's still plenty of tournament left to play, the early exits of Raducanu and Fery leave British fans with little to cheer about on day four in Melbourne.
