Dunk & Egg Lives On?! George R.R. Martin's SHOCKING Plan!
Gaming News 21 January 2026

Westeros fans, rejoice! It seems the team behind HBO's "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" is determined to avoid the pitfalls that plagued the later seasons of "Game of Thrones." Showrunner Ira Parker recently revealed that George R.R. Martin himself has provided a safety net of sorts: outlines for a whopping 12 potential "Dunk and Egg" stories, should the prequel series prove popular enough to extend beyond its initially planned three seasons.

Dunk & Egg Lives On?! George R.R. Martin's SHOCKIN...

For those unfamiliar, "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" is based on Martin's "Tales of Dunk and Egg" novellas, a lighter, more episodic counterpoint to the sprawling epic that is "A Song of Ice and Fire." Season 1 adapts the first novella, "The Hedge Knight," and from the sounds of it, Parker is confident in steering clear of the narrative drift that some felt derailed the original series. "Even though we don’t have the ins and outs of every story, we know canonically the major beats of Dunk and Egg throughout their lives. So we wouldn’t necessarily run into the same trouble as the flagship did," Parker told The Hollywood Reporter. That's a relief, to say the least.

Of course, the elephant in the room is Martin's perpetually unfinished "The Winds of Winter." While he intends to write more "Dunk and Egg" tales, their publication hinges on finally delivering the penultimate installment of his main saga. And, as we all know, time is not something we can guarantee. Martin himself has no contingency plan if he passes before completing the series. A sobering thought, indeed.

Parker seems genuinely enthusiastic about continuing "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" beyond three seasons, quipping, "I would do 12 of these." However, he acknowledges HBO's current plans: "I would say HBO’s plan is for us to do the three novellas, and that’s it.” Still, with 12 outlines in hand from Martin, the potential is certainly there, should the series resonate with viewers and HBO's strategy shifts.

Looking ahead, Season 2 is already in production, adapting "The Sworn Sword." Parker hints at a potentially smaller scope for the second season. “It’ll still be six episodes. I think the scope will be same, maybe even smaller. The budget has stayed the same, but everything is more expensive due to inflation. Plus, book two takes place in a drought, so we can’t shoot exteriors in Belfast,” said Parker. “We have to go to a sunny location with no water, which costs money — that’s a major expense that we did not have in season one. I’m having a lot of fun season two. It’s going to be a different season, and, I hope, for the better.” So, while we might see a shift in scenery and a tighter focus, Parker promises a compelling continuation of Dunk and Egg's adventures.
