Portland-based animation powerhouse Laika is shaking things up with the distribution of their upcoming stop-motion feature, *Wildwood*. Buckle up, animation fans, because this one's got a fresh approach.
Laika's 'Wildwood' Release Date SHOCK! What This M...
Set to hit U.S. theaters on October 23, 2026, *Wildwood* will be distributed domestically by Fathom Entertainment, a move that signals a shift from the traditional studio system. International sales will be handled by FilmNation Entertainment. The film, directed by Travis Knight (who also helmed the visually stunning *Kubo and the Two Strings*), is based on Colin Meloy’s novel, *Wildwood*, from *The Decemberists* fame. If you know the band, you know this is going to be something special.
And the voice cast? Prepare to be amazed. The film boasts a veritable constellation of talent, including Carey Mulligan, Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Jacob Tremblay, Mahershala Ali, Angela Bassett, Awkwafina, Jake Johnson, Charlie Day, Amandla Stenberg, Jemaine Clement, Maya Erskine, Tantoo Cardinal, Tom Waits (yes, *that* Tom Waits!), and Richard E. Grant. Talk about an all-star lineup lending their voices to bring this story to life!
David Burke, Laika’s Chief Marketing and Operations Officer, emphasized the studio's commitment to forging its own path. “*Wildwood* is a testament to Laika walking its own path,” Burke stated. “For *Wildwood*, we’re taking a more customized approach to how we bring the film to audiences, matching partners to the specific needs and ambitions of the project." This tailored approach, partnering with Fathom for domestic release and FilmNation internationally, seems designed to maximize the film's reach while preserving Laika's independent spirit. It's a smart move, honestly.
This isn't Laika's first foray into working with Fathom. The partnership previously collaborated on the highly successful theatrical re-releases of *Coraline* (celebrating its 15th anniversary!) and a remastered version of *ParaNorman*. These re-releases proved there's a huge appetite for Laika's unique brand of storytelling on the big screen.
Ray Nutt, CEO of Fathom Entertainment, clearly shares the enthusiasm. He calls *Wildwood* "a magnificently ambitious stop motion film and a landmark achievement in handcrafted cinematic artistry." He added that Fathom is "elated" to build on their past successes with Laika and to be "entrusted as the distributor for a full, nationwide U.S. theatrical release." It's a significant step for Fathom, solidifying their position as a serious player in specialty theatrical distribution. Considering how visually stunning and heartfelt Laika's films are, I personally think this is a fantastic partnership. October 2026 can't come soon enough!
