Almerimar Marina: Shocking Tender Twist! What's Next for Almería?
Current Affairs 20 January 2026

Big changes are afloat for Almerimar Marina in Almería. After a good run spanning nearly half a century, the Andalusian Regional Government has decided to shake things up, declining to extend the operating concession of Almerimar, the company that’s been running the show since 1974. That original agreement is now officially kaput, despite Almerimar's request for another 25 years at the helm.

So what does this mean? Well, the Public Agency of Ports of Andalusia (APPA) is now set to launch a new, open bidding process to find someone else to manage this significant marina. The official line is that this decision champions transparency, giving everyone a fair shot at running the port. And frankly, after such a long period under one management, a little fresh perspective might be just what Almerimar needs.

Almerimar Marina isn't just any old boat park. It’s one of the largest leisure ports in Europe, sporting over 1,100 berths. We're talking everything from tiny fishing boats to seriously impressive luxury yachts. More importantly, it's the heart of a thriving tourist scene, packed with bars, restaurants, and places for families to kick back. I've visited myself a few times, and it’s always buzzing, especially during the summer months. Plus, it's home to a small, but tight-knit community; about 80 families live aboard their boats year-round, with even more moving in for the warmer winter season.

To be fair, Almerimar didn't just sit back and expect an automatic extension. They proposed a €9 million investment plan to sweeten the deal. The plan involved modernizing the marina, replacing the old sailing school with a swanky new nautical and social center. Think gym, fancy changing rooms, even physiotherapy – a veritable yachtie's paradise! They also threw in plans for eco-friendly upgrades, better drainage, breakwater repairs, electric vehicle chargers, and general safety improvements around the marina. All of this aimed at making the port more sustainable and enjoyable for everyone.

However, the Regional Government seems to have decided that a fresh start, and the competition it brings, is ultimately the best course of action. The bidding process is sure to be intense, with many companies vying for the chance to manage such a prime piece of coastal real estate. One thing is for sure, the future of Almerimar Marina is about to be charted in a brand new direction. It will be interesting to see who ends up taking the helm and what changes they bring to this iconic Almerian landmark. Stay tuned!
