DOJ Investigates Church Disruption: Anti-ICE Activists Targeted?!
Current Affairs 20 January 2026

The Department of Justice has officially launched an investigation into the disruption of a church service in St. Paul, Minnesota, by anti-ICE activists. This comes amidst heightened tensions in the state following the controversial shooting of Renee Good by an ICE agent earlier this month. It’s a powder keg of emotions right now, and this incident at the church seems to have lit the fuse.

DOJ Investigates Church Disruption: Anti-ICE Activ...

The incident occurred at Cities Church, where, according to reports, dozens of protesters stormed the Sunday service, chanting slogans like “ICE out” and “Justice for Renee Good.” The core of their grievance? Allegations that one of the church’s pastors, David Easterwood, is actively involved in leading an ICE field office. A pretty serious accusation, if true.

Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon has been vocal about the DOJ’s concern. She stated that they are examining whether federal civil rights laws were violated – specifically, if the protesters desecrated a house of worship and interfered with Christian worshippers. The potential violation under scrutiny is the 1994 FACE Act, which, as many will recall, protects worshippers from intimidation and obstruction at religious sites.

Now, it gets a little more complicated. Reports from MinnPost indicate that Pastor Easterwood is already a defendant in a lawsuit alleging excessive use of force by ICE agents. Furthermore, he was photographed alongside Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem at a press conference back in October. It paints a picture, doesn't it? A picture that fuels the protesters’ narrative, at least.

One of the protest organizers, Nekima Levy Armstrong, is pushing back hard. She denies any wrongdoing and accuses the federal government of "unleashing barbaric ICE agents upon our community." It's the kind of charged language we've been hearing more and more often lately, a sign of how polarized the country has become on immigration issues.

This whole situation highlights the raw nerve that immigration policy has become under the Trump administration. The stepped-up ICE raids, driven by the President's vow for a massive deportation operation, have sparked outrage and protests nationwide. Democrats have consistently accused the administration of overreach and abuse of power. This church disruption, and the subsequent DOJ investigation, is just the latest chapter in that ongoing saga. We'll be watching closely to see how this plays out; it definitely has the potential to escalate already fraught relations in Minnesota and beyond.
