James Gunn, the head honcho over at the DC Universe, has dropped a little nugget of information for all you Bat-fans out there. It looks like we're going to have to be patient – seriously patient – when it comes to getting any concrete news on "The Brave and the Bold," the Batman film set within the new DCU.
James Gunn SHOCKS Fans! No Batman News Until...?!
Why the hold-up? Well, Gunn has essentially said he doesn't want to muddy the waters while Matt Reeves is still crafting his "Batman Epic Crime Saga" with Robert Pattinson. "The Batman 2" is slated for October 1, 2027. That's a long wait, folks, five and a half years after the first film hit screens! And with Reeves reportedly still planning a full trilogy, we're talking about a considerable commitment to Pattinson's very particular vision of the Dark Knight.
The key here is separation. Pattinson's Batman exists in its own little pocket universe, completely distinct from the rebooted DCU Gunn is building. This means we'll be getting a completely *different* Batman for "The Brave and the Bold," which is all about exploring Batman's relationship with his son, Damian Wayne (aka Robin). Casting that new Batman is a whole other can of worms, and it sounds like Gunn doesn't want to even think about it publicly until Reeves' next installment is well and truly out in the world.
Gunn's been pretty upfront about this. When quizzed on social media about updates on "The Brave and the Bold," he made it clear that nothing's coming until "The Batman 2" is complete. "I'm dependent on when there's an actionable script ready so there is no way of me guessing this," he confessed. "Also, frankly, we're well into Batman 2, and I wouldn't want to cloud the Batsphere until after that." You can't fault him for wanting to avoid confusing the audience.
And it's not just about timing; it's about avoiding overkill. Gunn also stated that he has no intention of releasing two Batman movies in the same year. A smart move, in my opinion. Too much Bat-saturation could easily lead to fatigue. Remember when we had like, three Spider-Man reboots within a decade? Nobody wants that for Batman, especially with the stakes this high. Gunn himself admitted last year that Batman was his "biggest issue in all of DC right now," which, considering the scale of the project, is saying something!
While "The Brave and the Bold" was reportedly in "very active development" as of early 2025, with the story "coming together very nicely," there's still no firm confirmation that Andy Muschietti ("The Flash") is still attached to direct. So, buckle up, Bat-fans. This is going to be a marathon, not a sprint. But hey, good things come to those who wait, right?
