Vall de Laguar Water Crisis: Is Your Tap Safe?! Residents Furious!
Current Affairs 19 January 2026

Anger is simmering in Vall de Laguar, a picturesque municipality nestled in the Alicante province, as residents find themselves increasingly reliant on Water tankers for their most basic need: drinking water. For weeks now, tap water has been deemed unsafe for consumption, forcing locals, especially the elderly and vulnerable, to depend on emergency deliveries. This isn’t just an inconvenience; it’s a real disruption to daily life.

The opposition party, Compromís, has seized on the crisis, issuing a scathing condemnation of what they call the "inaction and mismanagement" by the ruling Partido Popular (PP). According to Compromís, the situation is a direct result of years of neglect, despite the PP's control over key Water management administrations. They argue that access to potable water is a fundamental right, not a luxury to be rationed out via tanker trucks.

“It’s simply unacceptable,” stated Ximo Perles, Compromís spokesperson in the Alicante Provincial Council, in a press release. He went on to accuse PP leaders like Toni Pérez, president of the Alicante Provincial Council, and Carlos Mazón, president of the Valencian regional government, of hypocrisy. “They’re quick to criticize the Spanish government over water policies, but they’re failing to address the crisis right here, in their own backyard.”

What makes this situation even more frustrating for residents is that this isn't a new problem. Potability issues have plagued Vall de Laguar for some time. In fact, an infrastructure project recently completed by the Alicante Provincial Council was supposed to fix the problems, particularly the persistent turbidity and overall poor water quality. Yet, here we are, back to square one. The irony, of course, is thick enough to cut with a knife.

Compromís has also criticized the Provincial Water Board meeting held this week, dismissing it as a "political propaganda exercise" by the PP. They point to similar water crises in other municipalities like Teulada Moraira and El Poble Nou de Benitatxell a couple of summers ago. Grand promises of new infrastructure were made then, but Compromís claims that not a single euro has been allocated to those projects two years later. "The budget once again assigns zero euros," Perles emphasized. "This is not a coincidence; it is a way of governing that abandons the towns of the Marina Alta."

The situation in Vall de Laguar is, sadly, a stark reminder that even in a developed region, access to clean, safe drinking water can never be taken for granted. It's a basic human right, and residents are understandably angry that their government seems unable or unwilling to guarantee it. Perles concluded with a direct challenge to the president of the Alicante Provincial Council: "Stop playing party politics and start delivering clean water." The residents of Vall de Laguar deserve nothing less.
