El Ingenio shopping centre in Vélez-Málaga is having a moment. Not just a good year, but a record-breaking one. Forget the doom and gloom you hear about Retail's decline; this place is thriving, and the numbers don't lie.
Velez Malaga's El Ingenio SHATTERS Records! You Wo...
The centre reported a whopping 9.2 million visitors in 2025, a 3.4 percent jump from the previous year. Now, I've seen a lot of these press releases, and a few percentage points might not sound like much, but in the Retail world, it's huge. Especially when you consider that national retail foot traffic in Spain saw far more modest gains. It really puts El Ingenio's performance in a different league.
Owned by Salsa Patrimonio and managed by MVGM, the folks over at El Ingenio are understandably pleased. They're calling the 2025 results “very positive,” and honestly, they deserve to. While the ShopperTrak index showed only about a 2.5 percent rise in visitor numbers nationally, and the Cadlan index basically flatlined, El Ingenio was soaring. The company went on to say the numbers show a "strong ability to attract visitors in a context of limited sector-wide growth." That's putting it mildly, I'd say.
But it's not just about the footfall. Aggregate store turnover also jumped by an impressive 7.1 percent. That's real money flowing into the local economy, and a testament to the centre's appeal to shoppers. Plus, 2025 was El Ingenio's 25th anniversary, making the record even sweeter.
Opened in 2000, El Ingenio was designed to be more than just a place to shop. It aimed to be a destination, blending retail with leisure and a distinct Andalusian vibe. Think open-air spaces, family-friendly entertainment, and a connection to the local culture. I remember visiting it myself a few years back and being struck by how different it felt from the typical boxy shopping malls you find elsewhere. It felt more like a community space.
Over the past quarter-century, El Ingenio has become a commercial powerhouse, not just in Málaga province, but across Andalusia. Its success comes down to a clever mix of national and international brands, a wide variety of restaurants, a multiplex cinema, and plenty of leisure activities. That kind of diversified offering is key to attracting and keeping customers in today's competitive market, and El Ingenio seems to have cracked the code.
And let's not forget the architecture. Bright, airy spaces, natural light, and landscaped outdoor areas all contribute to a welcoming atmosphere. It’s this focus on creating a pleasant experience that has undoubtedly played a significant role in El Ingenio's continued success, even after 25 years in the game. Here's to the next 25!
