Patience, Skyrim Fans: Elder Scrolls 6 Still "A Long Way Off," Todd Howard Confirms
The wait continues for fans of The Elder Scrolls franchise. Despite being announced over seven years ago, Bethesda Game Studios chief Todd Howard has cautioned that The Elder Scrolls 6 is still a considerable distance from release. In a recent interview with GQ magazine, Howard, while celebrating the anniversary of Fallout 4, reiterated the need for patience amongst the eagerly awaiting fanbase. "I'm preaching patience," he stated, "I don't want fans to feel anxious."
Elder Scrolls 6: Don't Hold Your Breath, But Maybe...
This news, while perhaps unsurprising to some, will undoubtedly be met with a mix of disappointment and resignation by many. The announcement of The Elder Scrolls 6 has now been around for longer than the entire lifespan of its predecessor, Skyrim, at the time of the announcement. Skyrim, released in November 2011, had been captivating gamers for 2,403 days when the world first got a glimpse of The Elder Scrolls 6 at E3 in June 2018. Now, over seven years later, the release date remains shrouded in mystery.
Howard himself acknowledged the extended development
Howard himself acknowledged the extended development timeline last year, admitting the passage of time since the announcement. While concrete details remain scarce, Bethesda confirmed that The Elder Scrolls 6 entered "early development" in August 2023, with "early builds" reportedly available by March 2024. This indicates progress, albeit slow, towards the eventual release.
However, amidst the confirmation of a lengthy wait, Howard offered a glimmer of hope. While not confirming anything explicitly, he teased the possibility of a surprise "shadowdrop," similar to the remastered release of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion. This tantalizing hint has ignited speculation and renewed optimism within the community, suggesting that Bethesda might be planning a strategic release to capitalize on the pent-up demand.
Currently, Bethesda is heavily invested in the Fallout universe, with hundreds of employees dedicated to Fallout 76 and other undisclosed projects. Howard assured fans that despite the focus on Fallout, The Elder Scrolls 6 remains a daily priority for the studio. While the exact timeline remains uncertain, the commitment to the project appears unwavering.
For now, Elder Scrolls enthusiasts must heed Howard's call for patience. The journey to Tamriel's next chapter may be long, but the possibility of a surprise arrival keeps the flame of anticipation burning bright.
