Disney & Star Wars Era ENDS! What Happens Now?!

Disney & Star Wars Era ENDS! What Happens Now?!
Culture & Arts 18 January 2026

A seismic shift has occurred in the galaxy far, far away – and much closer to home at Disney headquarters. Kathleen Kennedy, the president of Lucasfilm, is stepping down after a 13-year run, officially closing the curtain on what many consider the first "Star Wars era" under Disney's watchful eye. This isn't just a changing of the guard; it feels like a whole new hope (sorry, I had to!).

Disney & Star Wars Era ENDS! What Happens Now?!

Kennedy took the reins back in 2012 when Disney acquired Lucasfilm for a cool $4.2 billion. Under her guidance, Star Wars catapulted into a modern content juggernaut, generating staggering box office returns and expanding into every corner of the entertainment landscape. We saw the release of the sequel trilogy – Episodes VII, VIII, and IX – which, let's be honest, were met with mixed reactions but undeniable financial success. Then there were the standalone films, "Rogue One" (a personal favorite) and "Solo," and a whole galaxy of streaming content on Disney+: "The Mandalorian," "The Book of Boba Fett," "Obi-Wan Kenobi," "Ahsoka," and the critically acclaimed "Andor." Not to mention the animated series, video games, books, and comics – the Star Wars universe just kept expanding.

Now, it's impossible to talk about Kennedy's tenure without acknowledging the controversies. Some fans felt the sequel trilogy missed the mark, and there were definitely some turbulent moments along the way. However, you can't argue with the numbers. Those Star Wars films collectively raked in a whopping $5.6 billion at the box office, more than covering Disney's initial investment. That's a win any way you slice it.

So, who's taking over? The leadership baton is being passed to Dave Filoni, currently the studio's chief creative officer, and Lynwenn Brennan, head of business operations. Filoni, a name familiar to any serious Star Wars fan thanks to his work on "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" and "Ahsoka," will become president. Brennan will serve as co-president, jointly managing the day-to-day operations. This feels like a smart move. Filoni has a deep understanding of the lore and a proven track record of creating compelling Star Wars stories.

Filoni himself acknowledged Kennedy's impact, stating he was honored to continue her legacy. And that's a significant legacy indeed. Before taking the helm at Lucasfilm, Kennedy was already a Hollywood powerhouse, co-founding Amblin Entertainment with Steven Spielberg and producing iconic films like "E.T.," "Jurassic Park," "Raiders of the Lost Ark," and the "Back to the Future" trilogy. She's a legend in her own right.

Ultimately, this transition marks a pivotal moment for Star Wars. Will Filoni and Brennan continue the franchise's commercial success while also satisfying the passionate fanbase? Only time will tell. But one thing is certain: the next chapter of the Star Wars saga is about to begin.
