NATO Allies Betrayed? Trump's Greenland Gambit Sparks Global Fury!
Current Affairs 17 January 2026

Well, folks, it seems things have taken a turn for the…unconventional. President Trump, never one to shy away from a bold move, has slapped tariffs on eight European NATO members over his Greenland acquisition plans. Yes, you read that right.

NATO Allies Betrayed? Trump's Greenland Gambit Spa...

According to reports, the tariffs are a direct response to these nations opposing his repeated attempts to purchase the Danish autonomous territory. He’s framing it, of course, as a matter of “national security,” citing an alleged threat from both China and Russia. Trump has been increasingly vocal about acquiring Greenland, even hinting at the possibility of using force, which, frankly, is a bit much.

The tariffs, announced via a Truth Social post (naturally), are slated to begin at 10% on February 1st and then jump to a hefty 25% in June. Trump’s adamant that they’ll stay in place until a "complete and total purchase" of Greenland is achieved. He reiterated his concerns about Beijing or Moscow swooping in to grab the island. Both countries have denied any such intentions, and local Greenlandic officials seem equally baffled by the claims.

In his post, Trump stated that these countries have "journeyed to Greenland, for purposes unknown" and that "nobody will touch this sacred piece of Land." The countries affected by the tariffs include Denmark (obviously), Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, The United Kingdom, The Netherlands, and Finland. All tariffs are "due and payable" until a deal is reached, according to Trump.

While the European NATO states haven't publicly gone to war with the US over this Greenland situation, these nations have sent small numbers of military personnel to Greenland, showing support for Denmark. It's a clear sign of solidarity, even if it's a relatively quiet one.

The Danish and Greenlandic authorities have been crystal clear: Greenland isn't for sale. They insist the island's future is up to its people, who voted back in 2008 to maintain their autonomous status within the Kingdom of Denmark. It’s a thorny situation, to say the least. Is this just more Trump brinkmanship, or will he actually follow through? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure, this Greenland saga just keeps getting weirder.
